Salthawk girls lose to Olathe South, to play for 3rd place at Mid-America Classic

Hutchinson High School's team name (Salthawks) is not used by any other American high school.

The Hutchinson Salthawk girls basketball team will play McPherson for third in place in the 30th annual Mid-American Girls Classic Saturday.

The Salthawks (6-4) lost to Olathe South 49-19 and Manhattan defeated McPherson 48-38  Friday night in the tournament semifinals at the McPherson Roundhouse.

Hutchinson trailed 19-3 at the end of the first quarter, 22-8 at halftime and 40-11 at the end of the third quarter. The Falcons outscored the Salthawks 9-8 in the fourth quarter for the 30-point victory.

Kaia Smith led Hutchinson with 6 points, followed by Kohlbuie Craft 5, Grace Porsch 3, Tenley Keeton 3 and Ava Krone 2. Krone had 5 rebounds, Craft 4 and Keeton 3. Posch had 2 assists and 2 steals.

Olathe South’s Eve Long posted a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds. She also blocked 7 shots and had 3 assists.

In Manhattan’s win over McPherson, the teams were tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter and Manhattan led at halftime 20-18. Manhattan outscored the Bullpups 14-10 in the third quarter and 14-10 in the fourth quarter.

Delaney Larson led the victorious Indians with 12 points, Bailey Busch scored 11 and Kat Ball 8. Manhattan had 17 steals, led by Ball with 7 and Larson with 5. Manhattan forced 26 turnovers. Busch had 6 rebounds.

Brooke Dole led the Bullpups with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Tylie Whitfield scored 9 points and Piper Alvord 7. Elle Bower grabbed 6 rebounds.

In the consolation games Friday afternoon, the Shawnee Mission East Lancers defeated the Dodge City Red Demons 49-30 and the Wichita Southeast Golden Buffaloes defeated the Andover Central Trojans 57-49.

Andover Central will play Dodge City for seventh place at noon Saturday and Shawnee Mission East will play Wichita Southeast for fifth place at 1:35 p.m.

In Shawnee Mission East’s win over Dodge City, the Lancers led the Red Demons 18-2 after one quarter and 30-15 in the first half.

Coco Reiser led the Lancers with 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Paige Stanfield scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Fina Kessler scored 10 points and Brie Murdoch 8. Addisyn Taylor scored 16 of Dodge City’s 30 points.

Kiasia Allen led the Wichita Southeast Golden Buffaloes with 13 points. Queen Chalmers added 12, Kamaria Marcy 11 and Alana Webb 10. Janessa Franklin scored 6 pints and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Reece Wilborn and Taylin Tabor led the Andover Central Jaguars with 12 points apiece. Payton Converse scored 7 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Kelsey Barscewski added 5 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Hutchinson Salthawk boys drop makeup game at Maize South

The Hutchinson Salthawk boys basketball team lost to Maize South 54-48 in a weather makeup game Friday night at the Maize South gymnasium.

The game was postponed from Jan. 7 because of inclement weather.

The Salthawks trailed 8-4 early in the first quarter but rallied to take a 19-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Hutchinson took a 30-20 lead on the hot shooting of senior Terrell King, who scored 15 points.

Maize South went on an 8-0 run in the last 2:30 of the second quarter to cut Hutchinson’s lead to 30-28 at halftime. Hutchinson led 37-36 at the end of the third quarter.

Maize South outscored the Salthawks 18-11 in the fourth quarter.

Terrell King led the Salthawks with 18 points. Levi Kepler scored 9 points and Lamar Govain 8. Taishaun Govain scored 3, Tramel Walker 3, Jalen Crable 3, Danny Boone 2 and Clancy Cox 2.

Kepler grabbed 7 rebounds, King 6, Lamar Govain 5 and Crable 4. King had 3 assists.

Hutchinson made 8-of-13 field goal attempts in the first quarter but finished 15-of-42. The Salthawks also made 12-of-20 free throws.

Cy Stucky led Maize South (7-6) with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Stratten Ebers tallied 13 points.

“We’re very disappointed,” said Hutchinson boys basketball coach Bryan Miller. “We did a good job against the man-to-man defense. But when they went to the zone defense, that’s been our kryptonite all year.”

The Salthawk boys will play Maize South again on Tuesday at the Salthawk Activity Center. The varsity girls game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m.

Next Friday night (Feb. 7) is “Pack the SAC Night.” There will be a food drive to raise 1,000 pounds of food for the food pantry.

The halftime entertainment will be the ICT Aerobelles Granny Basketball Team (featuring women from the ages of 50 to 92). There will be a competition of the USD 308 grade schools.

No. 8 Haven to play No. 2 Halstead for Wildcat Girls Classic championship

The Halstead girls basketball team, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, will play No. 8 Haven in the 3:30 p.m. championship game Saturday at the Haven Wildcat Girls Classic.

Andale will play Valley Center for third place at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The tournament is being played at the Haven gymnasium.

Halstead defeated Valley Center 38-21 in the semifinals of the Haven Wildcat Girls Classic Friday night.

Haven defeated Andale 49-31 in the other semifinal Friday night. Avery Brawner scored 20 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and had 3 steals for the victorious Wildcats. Sienna DeFrain scored 17 points.

Sorrell DeFrain scored 5 points, Rilynn Patry 4 and Zaprina Percy 3. Sydney Holzrichter had 4 assists and Sienna DeFrain 3.

In Haven’s 42-32 win over Garden Plain Thursday, Patry scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Brawner scored 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

Andale was paced in the Haven game by Brooke Grimes with 12 points and Maddie Lies with 8.

In the consolation round, Cheney defeated Garden Plain 45-33 and Towanda-Circle defeated Maize 48-24.

Garden Plain and Maize will play for seventh place at 11 a.m., followed by the fifth-place game between Cheney and Towanda-Circle at 12:30 p.m.

Hutchinson Trinity girls, boys swept by Salina Sacred Heart

The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School girls and boys basketball teams were swept by Salina Sacred Heart Friday night at the Trinity gymnasium.

The Trinity girls lost 51-36 and the Celtic boys lost 60-44.

Sophomore Alex Suter-Tan led the Celtic girls with 21 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

The Trinity teams play at Hutchinson Central Christian Tuesday and host Sedgwick next Friday.

Hesston teams sweep Buhler Crusader girls, boys

The Hesston Swather girls basketball team, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, defeated Buhler 49-42 Friday night at the Hesston gymnasium.

The Buhler girls, ranked sixth in Class 4A by the KBCA, dropped to 9-4.

The Hesston boys, ranked No. 6 in Class 3A by the KBCA, won the varsity boys game over the Buhler Crusaders 56-40.

Hesston improved to 10-1. Buhler dropped to 4-8.

The Buhler boys were led by Isaiah Heredia with 14 points. Hesston’s top scorer was Reed Friesen with 20 points.

Pratt sweeps Nickerson Panther girls, boys at Pratt

The Nickerson High School Panther basketball teams were swept by the Pratt Greenbacks Friday night in Pratt.

The Nickerson girls lost 74-27 and the Panther boys lost 63-36.

The Nickerson boys and girls teams play at Andale Tuesday.

No. 5 Inman girls fight off Bennington

The Inman High School girls basketball team, ranked No. 5 in Class 2A by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, fought off Bennington 54-50 on the road Friday night.
