The Hutchinson High School boys basketball team fell to Class 6A’s No. 2-ranked and unbeaten Derby Panthers 69-54 in a makeup game Tuesday night at the Salthawk Activity Center.
The game was postponed from Jan. 7 because of inclement weather.
Hutchinson dropped its fourth straight game and fell to 4-6 overall. Derby improved to 12-0.
Hutchinson and Derby were tied 11-11 at the end of the first quarter, but the Panthers outscored the Salthawks 20-10 in the second quarter to lead at halftime 31-21.
Derby led 50-33 at the end of the third quarter. Hutchinson outscored Derby 21-19 in the fourth quarter to cut the final margin to 15 points.
Terrell King led the Salthawks with 16 points and Lamar Govain scored 14. Jalen Crable got his first start for the Salthawks because of an injury to Levi Kepler and scored 9 points, including two 3-pointers.
Taishaun Govain scored 6 points, Danny Boone 5 and Lucas Witt 2.
The Salthawks play at Maize South on Friday night.
Other area high school games on Tuesday
• The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic boys basketball routed Smoky Valley 52-30 Tuesday night at Lindsborg.
The Celtic boys improved to 3-9 and the Smoky Valley boys fell to 3-9.
The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic girls basketball team lost to Smoky Valley 50-36.
Smoky Valley improved to 5-7. The Celtic girls are 1-11.
The Celtic boys and girls host Salina Sacred Heart on Friday night.
• Hutchinson Central Christian girls basketball coach DJ Kauffman hit the 100-win milestone against Fairfield Tuesday night at Langdon with a 56-35 win. Kauffman accomplished the milestone in just 5 1/2 years
• The Haven High School girls basketball team, ranked No. 8 in Class 3A in the latest KBCA poll, defeated Nickerson 58-15 Tuesday night at the Nickerson gym.
Haven led 25-1 at the end of the first quarter and 33-3 at halftime.
The Haven girls improved to 9-2 and Nickerson dropped to 1-11.
Due to a shortage of players for Nickerson, the junior varsity girls game was not played.
• The Haven High School boys basketball team, ranked third in Class 3A, defeated Nickerson 62-34 Tuesday night at the Nickerson gymnasium and improved to 12-1.
Haven led 21-11 at the end of the first quarter, 33-16 at halftime and 52-23 after three quarters. The Wildcats outscored the Panthers 12-11 in the fourth quarter
• The Halstead High School girls basketball team improved to 10-0 with a 54-37 victory over Abilene Tuesday night at Abilene.
Halstead led 18-8 after one quarter, 29-17 at halftime and 44-28 after three quarters. The Dragons outscored Abilene 10-9 in the fourth quarter.
• The Halstead boys basketball team lost to Abilene 68-52 Tuesday night at Abilene.
Abilene led 20-9 at the end of the first quarter, 38-20 at halftime and 51-33 at the end of the third quarter. Halstead outscored Abilene 19-17 in the fourth quarter.
• The Chase High School boys basketball team snapped a 44-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 68-44 victory over Burrton at the Burrton gymnasium,
Three Chase Kats posted career highs in scoring. Freshman Malik Carson scored 33 points. Junior Leland Rice and senior Layton Winkelman each scored 14 points.
Chase improved to 1-14.
• The Great Bend Panther boys basketball team, ranked No. 4 in Class 5A by the KBCA, improved to 12-1 with a 68-41 win over Thomas More Prep-Marian Tuesday night at the Al Blllinger Fieldhouse in Hays.
The Monarch boys are 4-7.
• The Great Bend girls clipped TMP 41-32 at the Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays. Great Bend improved to 5-10 and TMP fell to to 7-5.
• The Reno County Sabres Homeschool girls basketball team defeated the Sunrise Christian Buffaloes 43-34 Tuesday night.
• The Little River girls basketball team defeated Herington 66-23 Monday night at Little River. Little River hosts Sunrise Christian Friday night.
• The Fairfield Falcon girls defeated Chase 40-24 Monday night at Langdon.
KBCA poll: Haven boys and girls, girls teams from Buhler, Inman, Halstead ranked
The Haven High School boys basketball team is ranked third in Class 3A and the Wildcats are ranked eighth in the latest Kansas Basketball Coaches Association poll released on Tuesday.
The Halstead girls are ranked second in Class 3A girls and Inman is ranked fifth in Class 2A girls.
The Buhler girls now are ranked sixth in Class 4A girls.
First-place boys teams are Shawnee Mission Northwest, Class 6A; Topeka Highland Park, Class 5A; Ottawa, Class 4A; Wichita Collegiate, Class 3A; Moundridge, Class 2A; Coldwater-South Central, Class 1A Division I; and Cunningham, Class 1A Division II.
First-place girls teams are Wichita Heights, Class 6A; Topeka Seaman, Class 5A; Topeka Hayden, Class 4A; Hesston, Class 3A; Pittsburg-St. Marys Colgan, Class 2A; Little River, Class 1A Division I; and Hanover, Class 1A Division II.
Buhler Crusader bowlers 2-2 against Andover Central
The Buhler High School varsity and junior varsity bowlers defeated Andover Central, but Andover Central varsity and JV boys competition Tuesday at The Alley in Hutchinson.
The next match for the Crusaders is Thursday at Bowlero in Wichita.
