No. 3 Dodge City women end No. 1 Hutchinson’s 54-game winning streak

The No. 3-ranked Dodge City Community College women’s basketball team put an end to No. 1 Hutchinson’s 54-game winning streak.

The Dodge City Conquistador women posted a 67-41 victory over the Hutchinson Blue Dragon women Saturday at the DC3 Student Events Center in Dodge City.

Hutchinson and Dodge City are the only nationally-ranked women’s basketball teams in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

The Dodge City Conquistadors improved to 16-2 overall (11-1 Jayhawk Conference). Hutchinson dropped to 17-1 overall (11-1 Jayhawk Conference).

Hutchinson led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter but Dodge City led 23-21 at halftime. 

The Conquistadors scored the final 5 points of the first half and the first 5 points of the third quarter.

Dodge City led by 16 points at the end of the third quarter at 44-28. The 5 points by Hutchinson in the third quarter was the fewest the Blue Dragons scored in a quarter this season.

Dodge City outscored Hutchinson 23-13 in the fourth quarter.

Hailey Jackson scored 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for the Blue Dragons. Madi Denison, a sophomore from Minneola  scored 8 points and pulled down 12 boards.

Shorna Preston led Dodge City with 17 points, 11 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 blocked shots. Layla-J Cameron scored 15 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and added 5 assists.

The 54-game winning streak was the longest winning streak in the history of Hutchinson women’s basketball. The Blue Dragons’ 39-game winning streak in conference play and a 19-game road winning streak also ended.

Since the beginning of the 2022-23 season, the Blue Dragons and Conquistadors are the two winningest teams in the KJCCC in terms of record.

The Blue Dragons are 77-9 since the start of the 2022-23 season and Dodge City is 72-11. The Blue Dragons are 5-3 against Dodge City in the last 2 1/2 seasons.

Hutchinson won both meetings against Dodge City during the 2023-24 season.

Hutchinson coach John Ontjes’ 18-year record is 500-97.

The Hutchinson Blue Dragon women host Barton Community College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Fort Hays Tech Northwest at 2 p.m. next Saturday.

The Dodge City women host Garden City at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and play Cloud County at Concordia at 1 p.m. next Saturday.

The Hutchinson-Dodge City women’s rematch is Wednesday, March 5, at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. It is the final regular-season game and final conference game for both teams.

Hutchinson men 69, Dodge City 64

The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team completed its first time through the Jayhawk Conference schedule Saturday with a 69-64 victory over the Dodge City Conquistadors.

The Blue Dragons improved to 13-5 overall (9-3 Jayhawk Conference). The Conquistadors dropped to 6-12 overall (3-9 KJCCC).

The Blue Dragons have the longest-current winning streak in the Jayhawk Conference this season of seven games.

The last win streak of at least seven games for the Blue Dragons came just last season from Jan. 20 to Feb. 17.

Hutchinson led at halftime 30-27.

Bo Aldridge led the Blue Dragons with 19 points. 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocked shots. DJ Dudley had 15 points and 9 rebounds. Isaiah Jackson 12 points and 9 rebounds.

Mikhail Abdul-Hamid added 9 points. Bobby Cannon had 6 points and 7 rebounds. Amari Davis and Kobe Smith each scored 2 points.

Derrick Rivers led the Conquistadors with 21 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Keshawn Brown Jr. scored 12 points, Mynor Strong 11 and Jamari Gamble 10.

The Blue Dragons and Conquistadors met for the 195th time in a series that began in 1935. Hutchinson won both meetings against Dodge City during the 2023-24 season.

The Dragons lead the overall series 127-68 and are 55-33 in games played in Dodge City. The 127 wins are the fourth-most by Hutchinson against a single opponent.

The Hutchinson Blue Dragon men host Barton Community College, the defending NJCAA men’s national champions, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

HutchCC hosts Fort Hays Tech Northwest at 4 p.m. next Saturday.

Hutchinson lost to Barton 94-89 in overtime Nov. 20 at Great Bend and defeated Fort Hays Northwest Tech 94-89 in overtime Nov. 23 at Goodland.

The Dodge City men host Garden City at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and play Cloud County at Concordia at 3 p.m. next Saturday.

Hutchinson Blue Dragon baseball team picked to finish 3rd in Jayhawk Conference

The Hutchinson Community College baseball team was picked to finish third in the 2025 Jayhawk Conference Coaches Poll.

The Blue Dragons received four first-place votes, while Cloud County and Barton had three each.

Both the Cloud County Thunderbirds and the Barton Cougars tied for first in the preseason poll with 71 points and the Blue Dragons had 66 points.

The rest of the preseason poll has Butler at No. 4, Dodge City at No. 5, Seward County at No. 6, Colby at No. 7, Garden City at No. 8 and Pratt at No. 9.

Hutchinson is the defending Jayhawk West champions after a record-setting 51-13 record. The Blue Dragons won the league with a 27-5 record.

Blue Dragon softball team picked to finish 2nd in KJCCC softball poll

The Hutchinson Community College softball team was picked to finish second in the 2025 title chase in the Jayhawk Conference.

The defending Region 6 Tournament champion Blue Dragons received four first-place votes and amassed 71 total points. Butler, which also had four first-place votes, was the preseason pick with 76 points.

Barton was picked third, Colby was fourth and Dodge City was fifth in the poll. Seward County, Garden City, which received one first-place vote, Pratt and Fort Hays Tech Northwest rounded out the poll.

The Blue Dragons posted a school-record 47 wins last season, going 47-12. The Dragons finished second behind Butler by two games.

Hutchinson opens the 2025 season on the road on Friday, Jan. 31, with a doubleheader at the Ottawa University junior varsity.

Two Hutchinson Blue Dragon women’s track team members qualify for NJCAA Indoor Championships 

Hutchinson Community College freshmen Deisheline Mayer Scott and Alycea McCoy opened their Blue Dragon careers qualifying performances for the NJCAA Indoor Championships on Friday in the 2025 season opener at the Washburn University Rust Buster at Topeka.

Mayer Scott earned a nationals berth in the shot put with a best attempt of 44 feet, 4.75 inches (13.53 meters).

Mayer Scott placed fourth at the Rust Buster with the 10th-best shot put in the NJCAA this season. She also posted the seventh-best shot put in Blue Dragon indoor history.

McCoy placed 14th in the pole vault after clearing 10 feet, 2 3/4 inches (3.12 meters). That ranks seventh in the NJCAA this season and was the seventh-highest women’s indoor pole vault in Blue Dragon history.

Freshman Azariah Dawes, from Hutchinson High School, posted the seventh-best Blue Dragon indoor 200 time in program history with a time of 26.52 seconds. She finished 16th in the event.

Dawes placed seventh in the triple jump with a top jump of 34-10 1/4 (10.62 meters). She also finished 18th in the long jump with a jump of 16-3 1/4 (4.96 meters).

Sophomore Aiyanna Green, also from Hutchinson High School, had the 12th-best weight throw in Blue Dragon history of 45-2 1/2 (13.78 meters).

The Blue Dragons next compete at the JUCO/NAIA Challenge next Saturday at Pittsburg State University.

Parkinson’s triple jump effort leads Blue Dragon men’s track team at Rust Buster track meet

Hutchinson Community College freshman Malique Parkinson had the highest individual placing on Friday at the Washburn University Rust Buster in Topeka.

It was the 2025 indoor track and field season opener for the Blue Dragons.

Parkinson placed second in the men’s triple jump with a top jump of 45 feet, 8 1/2 inches (13.93 meters). Parkinson also finished 15th in the long jump at 21-6 3/4 (6.57 meters).

Parkinson was one of five top 10 placings for the Blue Dragons on Friday.

The Blue Dragons next compete at the JUCO/NAIA Challenge on Jan. 25 at Pittsburg State’s Robert Plaster Center.
