Hutchinson Salthawk girls wrestling team places 16th at Newton TOC

Thirty girls wrestling teams competed Wednesday and Thursday on the first two days of the Newton Tournament of Champions.

Hutchinson’s girls placed 16th.

Sophia Zwickl finished fourth at 125 pounds with a 4-2 record. Zwickl posted a big-time win earlier in the morning by beating the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the state.

Hutchinson’s Aaida Brown placed sixth at 100 pounds with a 3-3 record.

Alexa Lewis finished 2-2 at 115 pounds, Izzy Castaneda 2-2 at 115 pounds, Ruby Foster 2-2 at 120 pounds and Baleigh Cousins 2-2 at 140 pounds.

Also competing for the Salthawks but not placing were Chloe Bell, 105 pounds, 1-2; Eco Kinast, 105, 0-2; Natalie White, 105, 0-2; Emma Mathias, 135, 0-2; Princess Mendoza, 135, 0-2; and Jillian Ferguson. 170, 0-2.

The Hutchinson High School boys wrestling team will compete Friday and Saturday at the Newton Tournament of Champions.

Halstead girls, boys basketball teams sweep Larned

The Halstead High School girls and boys basketball teams swept Larned Thursday night at the Halstead gymnasium.

The Halstead girls defeated Larned 47-31 and improved to 8-0. The Dragon boys downed Larned 61-53.

The Halstead girls led Larned 12-10 at the end of the first quarter, 31-14 at halftime and 40-21 after three quarters. Larned outscored the Dragons 10-7 in the fourth quarter for the final 16-point margin.

The Larned girls dropped to 5-3.

In the varsity boys game, Larned led Halstead 10-9 at the end of the fourth quarter.Halstead led at halftime 28-27 and 46-42 after three quarters. Halstead outscored Larned 15-11 in the fourth period.

Halstead’s boys improved to 5-3 and Larned’s boys fell to 4-4.

The Halstead boys will play Winfield at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the 55th annual Adolph Rupp Boys Invitational in Halstead.
