Trinity Celtic boys notch 1st win of the season, girls fall to Marion

The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic boys basketball team defeated Marion 68-64 for its first victory of the season Monday night and Marion defeated Trinity 52-16 in the varsity girls game.

The Trinity Catholic girls and boys basketball teams hosted Marion Monday night at the Trinity gymnasium.

The game was originally scheduled for last Friday, but was postponed to Monday because of inclement weather.

Max Ryan led the Trinity boys with 28 points — 1 point shy of his season-high 29. Cameron Kiser scored 10 and Lincoln Barnes 8.

The Trinity boys have a 1-6 record. The Marion boys dropped to 2-5.

The Trinity girls dropped to 0-7. Marion’s girls improved to 5-2.

The host Celtics host Ell-Saline on Tuesday and play at Remington on Friday.

The Marion boys and girls basketball teams host Bennington on Tuesday.

Buhler Crusader varsity girls, boys split with Winfield

The Buhler High School girls and boys basketball teams split their varsity games Winfield Monday night at Jim Baker Fieldhouse in Buhler.

The games were rescheduled due to inclement weather last Friday.

The Buhler girls defeated the Vikings 50-29 and the Crusader boys fell to Winfield 54-38.

In the varsity girls game, Buhler led 16-8 at the end of first quarter, 30-14 at halftime and 42-23 at the end of the third quarter. Buhler outscored the Vikings 8-6 in the fourth quarter.

The Buhler girls improved to 5-1 and the Winfield girls fell to 0-7.

In the varsity boys game, Buhler trailed Winfield 14-11 at the end of the first quarter and 32-22 at halftime. Winfield led 46-32 after three periods. Both teams scored 6 points in the final frame.

The Buhler boys dropped to 2-4 and Winfield’s boys improved to 4-3.

The Buhler girls and boys basketball teams play at Augusta on Tuesday and play at Clearwater on Friday.

National champion Blue Dragon football team will honored at HutchCC men’s basketball game Wednesday

The NJCAA national champion Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragon football team will be honored at halftime Wednesday during the Hutchinson-Seward County men’s basketball game.

The game tips at 7:30 p.m. at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The HutchCC-Seward women’s game will tip off at 5:30 p.m.

Fans can purchase championship T-shirts at the game.

Blue Dragon women No. 1 for the 7th straight week

The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team maintained its No. 1 spot NJCAA Division I national rankings for the seventh straight week.

The rankings were released on Monday.

Since returning to action for the second semester, the Blue Dragons have defeated Cowley (72-70), Butler (57-53) and Pratt (92-47) to improve to 16-0 and remain one of four undefeated teams in the nation. 

No. 2 Northwest Florida State (17-0), No. 8 Chipola (19-0) and No. 10 McLennan (13-0) are the other unbeaten teams.

The Blue Dragons have been ranked No. 1 in 13 consecutive polls dating back to last season and have been ranked in 22 consecutive polls and 181 of the last 203 polls.

Hutchinson plays host to Seward County on Wednesday and then travels to No. 3 Dodge City on Saturday.

Hutchinson and Dodge City are the only KJCCC ranked in the Top 25. Coffeyville is in the receiving votes list.

The Top 5 has Hutchinson, Northwest Florida State, Dodge City, New Mexico Junior College and Three Rivers this week.

The Hutchinson men’s basketball team (11-5) received votes in the NJCAA Division I men’s poll.

Four Kansas teams are ranked: Cowley College (15-2) is No. 9, Butler (13-3) is No. 11, Coffeyville (13-3) is No. 12 and Barton (13-3) is No. 13.

Hutchinson High bowlers open season season at Bakers Bowling Classic

The Hutchinson High School girls and boys bowling teams started the season Saturday at the Bakers Bowling Classic at Bowlero Northrock Lanes in Wichita.

The Hutchinson girls rallied from 23rd place to finish 16th and the Salthawk boys placed 21st.

The Salthawk bowlers will be back in action at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Alley in Hutchinson. Hutchinson hosts a triangular against Andover and Cheney.

The Salthawks will return to the Bowlero in Wichita Thursday for a triangular against Derby and Maize.

The Buhler boys and girls bowling team also will be competing at The Alley Tuesday. The Crusaders host a triangular against Wichita Central Christian Academy and Solomon.

Buhler competes in the Salina Quadrangular Jan. 23 at The Alley in Salina against Salina South, Salina Central and Salina Sacred Heart.

Salthawk boys swim team hosts invitational on Tuesday

The Hutchinson Salthawk boys swim team hosts the Hutchinson Invitational at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hutchinson YMCA.

Buhler will also compete along with Andover, Dodge City, Garden City, Wichita Collegiate, Wichita Independent, Goddard Eisenhower, Goddard and Liberal.

Hutchinson competes at the Maize South Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Andover Public Schools Aquatic Center.

Other schools competing at Maize are Maize South, Maize, Andover, Andover Central, Marion, McPherson, Rose Hill, Valley Center, Wichita Collegiate, Wichita Heights, Wichita Independent, Wichita North, Wichita Northwest, Wichita Southeast, Bishop Carroll, El Dorado and Goddard Eisenhower.

Hutchinson girls, boys wrestlers compete at Newton TOC

The Hutchinson High School girls wrestling team competes at the Newton Tournament of Champions Wednesday (3 p.m.) and Thursday (9 a.m.).

The Salthawk boys wrestling competes at the Newton TOC Friday and Saturday. The competition starts at 9 a.m. on both days.

Other schools competing during the two days of wrestling are Newton, Olathe South, Topeka Seaman, Salina Central, Salina South, Blue Valley Stilwell, Tonganoxie, Valley Center. Leavenworth, Manhattan, McPherson, Mill Valley. Great Bend, Holcomb, Blue Valley Southwest, Derby, Eureka, Garden City, Goddard, DeSoto, Douglass, Andover Central and Leon-Bluestem.

Buhler runners Ava Koster, Kai Mendenhall earn academic honors

Buhler High School cross country runners Ava Koster and Kai Mendenhall were selected as Kansas Class 4A Academic All-State by the Kansas Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association.

To be considered for the Kansas Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association Academic All-State in 2025, a student must meet the following criteria: 

• Achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.6 at the end of the fall semester for cross country or the spring semester for track and field

• Score at least 25 on the ACT or 1150 on the SAT.

Area players make Ad Astra Radio’s All-Area 11-Man, 8-Man Football Teams

Hutchinson High School seniors Terrell King (wide receiver/defensive back/punter) and Kade Smith (running back) were named to the Ad Astra Radio All-Area 11-Man Football Team.

Hutchinson Central Christian running back Ry Kooiman made the Ad Astra 8-Man First Team.
