The Fort Hays State University men’s basketball team improved to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the MIAA with a 69-44 victory over Emporia State Thursday night at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Kaleb Hammeke, a Trinity Catholic High School alumnus, scored 12 points to become the all-time leading scorer at Fort Hays State. He now has 1,767 points with 15 regular-season games left, the MIAA postseason tournament and perhaps some NCAA Division II Tournament games.
Hammeke, a 6-foot graduate student guard, passed Alonzo Goldston, who scored 1,766 points from 1994-97.
Hammeke scored 12 of the team’s first 19 points and didn’t score any points during the rest of the game.
The Tigers led from start to finish, scoring the first four points of the contest and opened the game on a 15-4 run.
The Tigers host Missouri Western next Thursday at Gross Memorial Coliseum.
The Tigers will be looking to avenge last week’s 47-44 loss in St. Joseph to the Griffons on Jan. 4.
Halstead girls down Wichita Trinity Academy, Dragon boys fall
The Halstead varsity girls defeated Wichita Trinity Academy 50-39 Friday night at the Trinity Academy East gymnasium. The Halstead Dragons boys lost to Trinity Academy 68-34.
The Halstead girls led Wichita Trinity 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, 26-16 at halftime and 38-32 at the end of the third quarter. The Dragons outscored Wichita Trinity 12-7 in the fourth quarter.
Wichita Trinity’s boys led Halstead 24-12 at the end of the first quarter, 34-21 at halftime and 47-29 at the end of the third quarter. Trinity Academy outscored the Dragons 21-5 in the fourth period.
McPherson boys, girls basketball teams 5-0 against Mulvane
The McPherson Bullpup basketball teams won all five games against Mulvane Friday night at McPherson.
The McPherson varsity boys won 76-40, the junior varsity boys won 55-26 and the 9th grade boys won 47-41. The Bullpup varsity girls won 50-32 and the JV girls won 33-29.
Big fourth quarter pushes Moundridge boys past Sterling
The Moundridge High School varsity boys basketball team went on a 25-13 run in the fourth quarter to win the varsity boys game 58-47.
Bear Moddlemog led the Wildcats with 29 points, including five 3-pointers. Heath Churchill scored 9 points.
Boston Ekart led the Sterling Black Bears with 16 points and Smith added 10.
No score was available from the varsity girls game.
Make-up dates for Hutchinson, Buhler, Trinity, Haven, Hutch YMCA, Central Christian, Pretty Prairie, Inman, Little River
• Reno County schools Hutchinson (USD 308), Hutchinson Catholic Schools (including Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School), Hutchinson Central Christian, Nickerson (USD 309), Langdon-Fairfield (USD 310), Haven (USD 312) and Buhler (USD 313) all canceled school and activities Friday.
• The Hutchinson Trinity girls and boys basketball games against Marion scheduled for Friday will be played Monday at the Trinity High gymnasium.
• The Hutchinson High School-Salina South girls and boys basketball games at Salina canceled on Friday will be rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 19.
• Saturday Night at the Y (Hutchinson YMCA) for all middle schoolers in Grades 6-8 has been moved to Saturday, Jan. 18. The event is free.
• Buhler girls and boys competitions and practices for Friday in grades 7-12 were canceled. Make-up dates for the Buhler home basketball games against Winfield (USD 465) will be determined.
* The Hutchinson Central Christian Middle School girls and boys basketball games scheduled for Thursday at South Barber were postponed.
• The Haven High School girls and boys basketball games at Pratt Friday were canceled Friday along with other school activities.
The Haven-Pratt make-up games will take place Monday, Feb. 17, at Pratt. They will not be counted as Central Kansas League games. Haven’s girls and boys will host Pratt on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Those games will count on the CKL schedule.
Haven will play at Hillsboro on Tuesday (Jan. 14), will host Andale next Friday (Jan. 17) and will play a make-up date Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Nickerson.
• Due to road conditions, Pretty Prairie (USD 311) announced that the Middle School B team Shootout basketball tournament and a make-up game scheduled for Saturday have been canceled. A make-up date is to be determined.
• Inman High School (USD 448) canceled classes and activities for Friday. Homecoming and other activities have been postponed to a later date.
• The Little River boys basketball team announced that Friday’s boys basketball home game against Peabody has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18.
The Little River girls basketball team will play a replacement varsity only home game Friday, Jan. 31, against Wichita Sunrise Christian Academy.
Vype Kansas spotlight: Nickerson’s Garrett Crossman, Haven’s Avery Brawner
Nickerson High School senior basketball player Garrett Crossman is featured in Vype Kansas’ Athlete Spotlight.
Haven High School senior Avery Brawner, who helped the Wildcat girls basketball team reach the Kansas Class 3A state tournament in 2024, also is featured.
Lyons girls wrestling team 2nd at Larned Round Robin
The Lyons High School girls wrestling team placed second out of 14 teams at the 2025 Larned Round Robin Thursday.
Three Lyons wrestlers won three first-place championship matches: Taylor Baxter, 100 pounds 4-0, 1st place; Jacynn Boeken, 105 pounds, 5-0, 1st place; and Kennedy Grizzle, 110 pounds, 4-0, 1st place.
