Dayana Acevedo Trent is the new HutchCC volleyball coach

Dayana Acevedo Trent has been named the 14th head coach of the Hutchinson Blue Dragon volleyball program.

The Hutchinson Community College athletic department made the announcement on Thursday.

Acevedo Trent had a four-year record of 98-29 at Odessa College and served as an assistant coach at Iowa Western Community College.

This past season, the Wranglers posted a 30-10 overall record. OC won its second-straight Region 5 Tournament championship to advance to nationals. Odessa placed 10th in the 2024 national tournament with a 2-2 record.

Acevedo Trent’s college volleyball career had stops at Iowa Western and the University of Texas-El Paso.

Originally from Naranjito, Puerto Rico, Acevedo Trent has an associate’s degree in general studies from Iowa Western Community College and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UTEP.

Hutchinson-Maize South basketball games rescheduled for Jan. 20 (boys), Jan. 27 (girls)

The Hutchinson High School-Maize South boys basketball games, which were postponed Tuesday, Jan. 7, because of inclement weather, have been rescheduled for Monday, Jan. 20, at Maize South.

The freshman boys game starts at 4:15 p.m., followed by junior varsity boys at 6 p.m. and the varsity boys at 7:30 p.m.

The Hutchinson-Maize South girls games have been rescheduled for Monday, Jan. 27, at Maize South.

The JV girls game starts at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity girls game at 7:30 p.m.

The Salthawk boys and girls basketball teams are scheduled to play at Salina South Friday night.

Hutchinson High School to hold Night of Champions on Feb. 21

Hutchinson High School will hold its Night of Champions Friday, Feb. 21, at the Salthawk Activity Center, during halftime of the Salthawk boys basketball game against Newton.

The 2004 state championship football team and the 2005 state champion boys golf team will be recognized.

In Vype Kansas magazine’s latest feature stories on Kansas athletes. Hutchinson High School three-sport standout senior Lily Rodriguez is featured.

Rodriguez is the starting point guard on the Hutchinson girls basketball team, she is three-year member of the varsity girls golf team and a four-year member of the varsity girls soccer team.

Haven High School senior Gatlin Rinehart, a member of the Wildcat basketball team that has a 7-0 record so far in 2024-2025, is featured.

Haven senior Detrick Nisly, who plays basketball and baseball for the Wildcats, was featured.

Halstead High School girls basketball player Addisen Wills, who also competes in track and cross country, also is featured.

Nickerson-Haven girls, boys basketball games rescheduled

Nickerson High School announced that the Haven-Nickerson girls and boys basketball games at Nickerson that were postponed on Tuesday because of inclement weather have been rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The junior varsity girls (two quarters) will be played at 4:30 p.m. (Old Gym); JV boys, 4:30 p.m. (New Gym); C team boys, 6 p.m. (Old Gym); varsity girls, 6 p.m. (New Gym); and varsity girls, 7:30 p.m. (New Gym).

In other Nickerson news:

• All practices for  Nickerson athletes were canceled because of expected incoming inclement weather.

• NHS debaters will compete in the Novice State Tournament at 8 a.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday at Topeka.

• The Panther girls wrestling team competes at 1 p.m. Friday at Augusta and the boys wrestling team competes at 9 a.m. Saturday at Augusta.

• The Nickerson girls basketball teams host Kingman Friday. The first games start at 4:30 p.m.

Area junior high, middle school basketball games postponed because of weather

• The Hutchinson Trinity Junior High School girls and boys basketball games scheduled for Thursday at Berean Academy-Elbing were postponed to Monday.

• The Pretty Prairie-Stafford middle school girls and boys basketball games scheduled for Thursday have been postponed because of possible inclement weather. A make-up date for the games is to be determined.

• Due to the icy roads and impending weather east of Sterling, the Sterling Junior High School girls and boys basketball games scheduled at Remington Thursday have been postponed to Tuesday.

Halstead alumnus Dominique Schutte hits Ottawa record for 3-pointers

Dominique Schutte’s eight 3-point field goals last Saturday in an 88-78 loss to Friends University tied an Ottawa University women’s record for made 3-pointers in a game.

Schutte scored 31 points against the Friends Falcons.

Schutte is a 6-foot freshman from Halstead High School. She leads the Braves in scoring at 12.2 points a game and blocked shots at 0.4 a game. Schutte averages 14.4 points game in KCAC play.

The Braves, 2-9 overall and 2-6 in conference play, play a KCAC road game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tabor College in Hillsboro.
