88 players were picked to play in the 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl during its selection show Wednesday morning (New Year’s Day), including three players from the Hutchinson Tribune coverage area.
Brice Kesler, Kansas Shrine Bowl executive director, and Sports in Kansas’ Chet Kuplen announced the player selections on the Shrine Bowl website and YouTube.
Hutchinson High School’s Terrell King (Class 5A), a 5-foot-8, 170-pound senior defensive back/punter was selected for the West squad.
Buhler’s Bodey Redenbaugh (Class 4A), 6-3, 305; and Halstead’s Connor Herman (Class 2A), 6-4, 273, were selected to play on the West squad offensive line.
The 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth (a sports construction firm) takes place Saturday, June 21, at Dodge City’s Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
The West team head coach is Dominick Dingle (Wichita Heights). Dingle was an assistant coach in 2024 and his son D.J. played for the West team in the 2022 Shrine Bowl.
Dingle will be assisted by Russ Wells (Wichita South 6A), Mike Vernon (Hutchinson 5A), Daniel Myears (Mulvane 4A), Tyson Bauerle (Hesston 3A), Butch Hayes (Council Grove 2A) and Alex McMillian (Plainville 1A).
Wells (2020), Vernon (2021) and Bauerle (2018) also have assisted on the West staff in previous Shrine Bowls. Bauerle also led the 2019 West team to a 26-7 victory as the head coach at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.
The East team head coach is Garrett Michael (Sabetha). He will be assisted by Josh Koerkenmeier (Blue Valley West 6A), Jared Swafford (Seaman 5A), Clete Frazell (Chanute 4A), Mike Berg (Wellsville 3A), Logan Wyrick (Humboldt 2A) and Roger Holthaus (Centralia 1A).
Among the 2025 East assistants, only Wyrick (2019) has previously coached in the Kansas Shrine Bowl.
Five members of the KSHSAA Covered All-State Top 11 and 16 members of the Top 33 were selected to play in the Kansas Shrine Bowl.
The West team will feature three Top 11 selections with Andale’s Cooper Marx, Eisenhower’s Carter Pabst and Andover Central’s Dawson Rodd earning a berth in the game.
They will be joined by Second 11 picks Carter Aslin of Manhattan and Drayton Knoll of Holcomb and Third 11 selections Jace Adler of Andover Central and Josh Burdick of Cheney.
The East has a pair of Top 11 selections on its roster in Gardner Edgerton’s Bravin Powell and Axtell’s Brandon Schmelzle.
The East also has Second 11 picks Ashton Moore of Louisburg and Jensen Schrickel of Hayden and Third 11 selections Kaleb Dewey of Gardner Edgerton, Brock Heath of Blue Valley Northwest, Conlee Hovey of Louisburg and Cru Huenfeld of St. Thomas Aquinas.
Other athletes could be invited. It will depend on whether any invited players decline their invitation or have to withdraw for some reason.
“We are excited to extend an invitation to this group of young men to represent themselves, their families, their communities and their high school football programs in a showcase that is so much bigger than just an all-star football game,” said Kesler in a news release.
“I hope the players understand how difficult of a roster this is to get selected for, and I want to congratulate them for all their hard work and dedication that has earned them this opportunity.
“They are joining a very select fraternity of Kansas high school football players who have had the opportunity, since 1974, to play a game they love and make a life-changing impact for the kids of Shriners Children’s Hospital.”
The Shrine Bowl of Kansas Inc. is a non-profit organization that benefits Shriners Children’s Hospital. Thanks to the supporters of the Kansas Shrine Bowl, nearly $4 million has been sent to Shriners Children’s since 1974.
During game week, the players will get the opportunity to meet some of the children helped by Shriners Children’s Hospital.
Organizers say that for many players, the hospital experience is the highlight of their time at the Kansas Shrine Bowl and showcases the game’s true purpose.
