Salthawk boys wrestling team 5-2 at Colby Eagle Invitational

The Hutchinson High School boys wrestling team posted a 5-2 dual record (3-0 on Day 2) at the 39th annual Colby Eagle Invitational Friday and Saturday at the Colby Event Center.

The Salthawks placed 10th in the team standings.

On Friday, the Salthawk wrestlers edged Wray, Colo., 40-36 and Goodland 63-18 in their first duals of the two-day tournament.

The Salthawks lost 42-39 to Atchison County-Effingham and 42-39 to Santa Fe Trail.

On Saturday, the Salthawk wrestlers defeated Cozad (Neb.) 48-18, Liberal 68-6 and McPherson 53-30.

Four Salthawk wrestlers went undefeated in the tournament. Cruz Cannon, Cooper Harris and Max Harris each went 7-0 and Kade Smith went 4-0.

Max Harris was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in Pool B. Harris defeated two returning state champions and the current No. 1 wrestler in Kansas Class 321A (No. 2 All-Class).

Cooper Harris earned the most pins (5) in Pool B.

The next match for Salthawk varsity wrestlers, varsity girls, junior varsity boys and JV girls is 4 p.m. Thursday against Dodge City at the Hutchinson High School North Gym.

The Hutchinson varsity competes at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Emporia Winter Classic. The JV boys and girls compete at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Rose Hill.

Hutchinson girls wrestling team competes at Great Bend Christmas Clash

Nine members of the Hutchinson girls wrestling team competed in the Great Bend Christmas Clash tournament Saturday.

Hutchinson’s top finishers were Sophia Zwickl, junior, 130 pounds, 4-2, 7th place; and Aaida Brown, freshman, 100 pounds, 2-3, 8th place.

Hutchinson JV wrestling team competes at Goddard

The Hutchinson High School junior varsity wrestling team competed at the Goddard JV Invitational Saturday.

Junior Sam Smalley captured first place in the 138-pound weight class with a 5-0 record. Junior Chris Evans placed first in the 157-pound weight class with a 4-0 record.

Sophomore Damien Nusser placed second at 113 pounds with a 2-1 record. Senior Anthony Gresham placed second at 150 pounds with 3-1 record. Sophomore Fernando Castillo placed second at 215 pounds with a 3-1 record.

Placing fourth were freshman Eli Parks with a 2-2 record and sophomore Jayden Tuchardt at 190 pounds with a 1-2 record.

Halstead boys, girls 6th at Hesston wrestling meet

The Halstead High School wrestling team traveled to Hesston for a 16-team tournament Saturday and both placed sixth.

Clayton Considine and Kahlyn Davis placed first. Addi Thompson, Connor Herman and Logan Overton placed second. Ava Armstrong placed third and Parker Metoyer placed fourth.

The Halstead girls wrestling team placed 11th out of 25 teams at the 4th Annual Girls Goodwill Invitational Friday in Douglass.

Mariah Swarts placed third with a 5-1 record and Kahlyn Davis placed third with a 4-1 record.

Parker Metoyer posted a 2-2 record. Alexis Westfall and Ava Armstrong both finished 0-2.

Blue Dragon women’s basketball team No. 1 going into 2025

The Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team stayed at No. 1 for the sixth straight week of the 2024-25 season.

The Blue Dragons have been ranked No. 1 in 12 consecutive polls (including the last six of the 2023-2024 season) and have appeared in 21 consecutive polls overall.

The Blue Dragons completed a 13-0 run through the first semester after defeating Cloud County 77-53 on Saturday.

The Blue Dragons are 13-0 overall and 7-0 in the KJCCC and received all 12 first-place votes in the final poll of the first semester.

The victory over Cloud County was their 50th consecutive overall win and 35th straight KJCCC victory.

The Top 5 has Hutchinson, Northwest Florida State, New Mexico Junior College, Dodge City and Wabash Valley. Butler Community College received votes.

The Blue Dragons return for the second semester on Saturday, Jan. 4, against Cowley College in a 2 p.m. game at the Sports Arena.

Several Hutchinson Tribune area football players were named to the Wichita Eagle’s All-State Team in Classes 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A.

Hutchinson High School senior Kade Smith was named as a running back on the Class 5A offense. Senior teammates Carter Morgan (linebacker) and Terrell King were named to the First Team Defense.

Hutchinson senior Taysen Runyon is the First Team kicker.

Honorable mention selections from Hutchinson are Kaleb Cape, offensive line; and Jaiden May, defensive line.

Buhler senior Bodey Redenbaugh was named to the First Team Class 4A All-State offensive line.

Buhler senior Will Hanen is a First Team linebacker and senior Mitchel McDaniel is a First Team defensive back.

In Class 2A, Halstead senior Connor Herman was All-State offensive line and senior teammate Braxon Creed was First team defensive back.
