The Kansas Class 3A Haven girls and boys basketball teams swept the Kingman Eagle Classic championship games Saturday night from Class 5A Great Bend.
The Haven boys led from start to finish and defeated the Great Bend boys, who qualified for the Class 5A state tournament last year, 53-41.
In the boys championship game, Haven jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the first quarter against Great Bend, led at halftime 26-17 and 36-24 at the end of the third quarter.
The Haven boys’ 1-3-1 defense slowed down the Panthers, who averaged 63 points a game in their first three games. Haven entered the game averaging 67 points a game.
Nash Wray led the Haven Wildcat boys with 16 points. Gatlin Rinehart added 11.
The Wildcats made seven 3-pointers, including four in the first half.
Ian Premer, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound junior forward, led Great Bend with 16 points. He scored 11 of the Panthers’ 17 first-half points. Cooper Ohnmacht added 9, Daxton Minton 8 and Jackson Wondra 6.
Haven improved to 4-0 and the Great Bend boys fell to 3-1.

The Haven girls led Great Bend 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats led 35-13 at halftime, helped by a 21-0 run.
The Haven girls led 47-22 after the third quarter and outscored GBHS 14-5 in the fourth quarter.
Sienna DeFrain led the Haven girls with 19 points. Avery Brawner and Zaprina Percy each scored 12. Percy hit four of Haven’s five 3-pointers.
DeShawna Bryant led the Panther girls with 9 points.
Third-place games: Sterling boys 64, Meade 44; Clearwater girls 47, Meade 34.
Fifth-place games: Kingman boys 58, Clearwater 45; Kingman girls 58, Sterling 42.

Hutchinson Trinity girls, boys both place 6th at Cheney Cardinal Classic
The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic varsity girls and boys basketball teams both placed sixth Saturday at the Cheney Classic Tournament.
The Hutchinson Trinity girls lost to El Dorado 48-44 in the girls fifth-place game and the Celtic boys lost to the Wildcats 64-44 in the boys fifth-place game.
The Trinity girls were led by Amy Suter-Tan with 15 points. Eilley Cost added 9 points, Cienna Maskil 9, Anika Paulsrud 8 and Brecken Downey 3.
Jackson Dozier led the Trinity Celtic boys with 13 points and Max Ryan scored 10 points.
Lincoln Barnes contributed 6 points, Aaron Gust 5, Beau Towell 4, Cameron Kiser 2, Jacob Thomas 2, Malachiey Alvarez 1 and Matt Armour 1.
The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic Celtic boys and girls teams will host Classical School of Wichita on Tuesday.
The Celtic squads will return to action after the Christmas break with road games Jan. 7 at Sterling and home games on Jan. 10 against Marion.
The Cheney boys defeated Pratt 55-48 to win the Cheney Cardinal Classic championship game.
Wellington defeated Cheney 45-30 to win the girls championship game.
Nickerson boys 6th, Panther girls 7th at Larned Keady Classic
The Nickerson High School boys basketball team lost to Larned 41-39 in the fifth-place game Saturday afternoon at the 2024 Larned Keady Classic.
Nickerson led Larned 14-7 at the end of first quarter, 24-13 at halftime and 34-24 at the end of the third quarter. Larned rallied with a 17-5 run in the final frame.
The Nickerson boys lost to Holcomb 66-52 in the first round and defeated Bucklin 45-39 in the consolation semifinals.
The Nickerson High School girls basketball team defeated Kinsley 34-31 Saturday afternoon to place seventh in the Keady Classic.
The Panthers led 7-4 at the end of the first quarter, but trailed at halftime 15-10. The score was tied 22-22 at the end of the third quarter. Nickerson outscored the Coyotes 12-9 in the final frame.
The Nickerson girls lost to Holcomb 68-21 in the first round and lost to St. John 65-24 in the consolation semifinals.
The Nickerson boys and girls wrap up the pre-Christmas break schedule at Haven on Tuesday.
Halstead girls place 1st, boys 3rd at Marion Classic
The Halstead High School girls basketball team defeated Berean Academy 43-31 Saturday afternoon in the girls championship game of the 17th annual Marion Classic.
Halstead and Berean were tied 8-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Bailey Bernal, Dalaina Schutte and Piper Schroeder were named to the All-Tournament Team. Schroeder also was named the Most Inspirational Player in the tournament.
The Halstead boys defeated Marion 80-53 for third place. The Dragons led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and 44-19 at halftime.
Reno County Sabres teams win consolation titles at Fairfield Falcon Classic
The Reno County Sabres Homeschool varsity girls and boys captured consolation championships Friday at the Fairfield Classic,
The Reno County girls defeated Cunningham 52-43 and the Reno County boys dominated against Flinthills 76-48.
Reno County’s Josh Schmidt was named to the Boys All-Tournament Team and Megan Asberry was named to the Girls All-Tournament Team.
