The Hutchinson High School varsity girls and boys basketball team hit the road Friday night to play Reno County rival Buhler at Jim Baker Fieldhouse.
The Hutchinson Salthawk girls improved to 2-0 with a 43-33 victory over the Buhler girls and the Hutchinson boys triumphed over the Crusader boys 59-43.
The Hutchinson girls went on a 7-0 run to take an 11-9 lead in the first quarter. Hutchinson led at halftime 18-15 and 31-23 at the end of the third quarter.
The Salthawks outscored the Crusader girls 12-10 in the fourth quarter for the 43-33 victory.
Kaia Smith led Hutchinson with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Grace Posch scored 10 points.
Natalya Krafels led Buhler with 9 points.
“We beat Buhler in a very physical grind-it-out game,” said Hutchinson girls basketball coach Kalen Hilst.
The Hutchinson Salthawk boys fell behind 6-0 to the Buhler boys in the first quarter, but went on a 15-2 run to lead 15-8 at the end of the period.
Hutchinson outscored Buhler 13-9 in the second quarter to lead at halftime 28-17. Hutchinson led 40-30 after three quarters and outscored Buhler 19-13 in the fourth quarter for the 16-point win at 59-43.
Sophomore Lamar Govain led the Salthawks with 15 points. Senior Terrell King scored 13, Tramel Walker 10 and Danny Boone 9.
Isaiah Heredia led the Buhler Crusaders with 12 points. Mitchel McDaniel scored 10 and Luke Holmberg 9.
The difference in the game was Hutchinson’s defense, which forced 24 Buhler turnovers.
Hutchinson (1-1) plays Campus Tuesday at Haysville. The Salthawk teams will wrap up the first semester by hosting Arkansas City next Friday.
Buhler’s boys and girls teams play Tuesday at McPherson and host Mulvane next Friday.
Hutchinson won the JV boys game 56-49. Buhler won the JV girls game 42-21, the freshman boys game 42-35 and the C team girls game 56-8.
Fairfield Falcon Classic
The Fairfield High School girls basketball team defeated Stafford 47-45 to capture third place in the Fairfield Falcon Classic Friday afternoon in Langdon.
In other Friday boys games, Fairfield defeated Burrton 78-15.
In a second-round games Thursday, the Reno County Sabres boys defeated Burrton 88-8 and the Reno County Sabres girls defeated Otis-Bison 33-26.
Four players scored 2 points apiece for the Burrton boys in the Reno County game. They were freshman Trystan Hernandez, freshman Colt Schmitt, junior Ryker Jones and senior Colton Robinson.
Kingman Eagle Classic
The Haven High School girls and boys basketball teams swept Kingman Friday at the Kingman Eagle Classic.
The Haven girls defeated Kingman 52-31 and the Haven boys beat Kingman 63-24.
Sienna DeFrain led the Wildcat girls with 22 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. DeFrain passed the 1,000-point milestone during the game.
Zaprina Percy scored 8 points and had 5 assists. Avery Brawner contributed 7 points and 4 steals.
Gatlin Rinehart led the Haven boys with 21 points. Dalton Bontrager scored 16 points and Blake Richey 8.
In other girls games at the Kingman Eagle Classic Friday, Sterling lost to Clearwater 53-29 and Lyons lost to Moundridge 52-40.
In other boys games at the Kingman Eagle Classic Friday, Inman lost to Lyons 53-34 and Sterling defeated Clearwater 80-34.
The Haven girls and boys both will play Great Bend for the Kingman Tournament championships at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Marion Tournament
The Halstead High School girls and boys basketball teams swept Conway Springs Friday afternoon on Day 2 of the Marion Tournament.
The Halstead girls won 57-31 and the Dragon boys won 61-45.
Halstead led 20-9 at the end of the first quarter and led at halftime 34-16. The Dragons outscored the Cardinals 17-9 in the third quarter for a 51-25 lead. Both teams scored 6 points in the final quarter.
The Halstead boys basketball team trailed Conway Springs 11-8 at the end of the first quarter but outscored the Cardinals 18-8 in the second quarter to lead 26-19 at halftime.
The Dragons increased their lead to 44-29 at the end of the third quarter. Halstead won the fourth quarter 17-16.
The Halstead girls advanced to the 4 p.m. championship game Saturday. The Dragons will play the Berean Academy-Marion winner.
The Halstead boys will play for third place at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Moundridge Tournament
The Inman High School girls basketball team defeated Lyons 69-22 on the third day of the Moundridge Tournament Friday at the Moundridge High School gymnasium.
The Teuton girls led at halftime 42-13.
The Inman varsity boys basketball team lost to Lyons 53-34. The Teutons trailed Lyons 23-14 at halftime and 34-24 after three quarters.
The Inman junior varsity boys basketball team defeated the Lyons boys JV squad 44-39. The Inman JV girls lost to Lyons 38-30.
The Moundridge varsity boys and girls teams both improved to 4-0 by sweeping Hillsboro. The Moundridge boys won 53-40 and the Wildcat girls won 31-28.
