The Hutchinson High School varsity girls and boys basketball teams opened the season against Maize Tuesday night at the Salthawk Activity Center.
The Hutchinson girls defeated Maize 50-34 and the Salthawk boys lost to the Eagles 59-46.
The Hutchinson girls and boys teams experienced playing with a 35-second shot clock for the first time.
In the varsity girls game, the Hutchinson Salthawks and Maize Eagles were tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Salthawks went on a 21-3 run (including the first 8 points) in the second quarter en route to a 31-13 halftime lead.
Hutchinson was outscored 12-9 in the third quarter but still led 40-25 at the end of the frame. The Salthawks won the fourth quarter 10-9.
Senior Grace Posch led the Salthawks with 18 points with three 3-pointers. Kaia Smith scored 15 points and also hit three 3-pointers.
The Salthawks made nine 3-pointers in the game.
Malaysia Ingram led the Maize Eagles with 11 points.
“We have lots of things to clean up, but we’re happy how we held it together and got a big league win,” said Hutchinson High School girls basketball coach Kalen Hilst. “We’re taking on a very solid and physical Buhler team Friday.”
In the varsity boys game, Maize led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter and 25-19 at halftime. Maize outscored the Salthawks 13-7 in the third quarter to lead 38-26. Maize outscored Hutchinson 21-20 in the fourth quarter for the 59-46 final score.
Terrell King led the Salthawks with 22 points and Taushun Govain added 12.
Maize (1-1), which lost its season opener 83-78 to Olathe West, was paced by Alan Hanna with 22 points. He scored 11 points in each half.
“They’re a pretty good team,” said Hutchinson boys coach Bryan Miller. “We didn’t have good attention to detail in the first and second quarter. We knew we would see all kinds of (defensive) looks.
“This was a good litmus test for us. It shows we can play with anybody in the league (Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I). They’re the No. 1 team in the league. I’m encouraged by the way we played.”
Hutchinson will play Reno County rival Buhler on Friday night. The girls game at the Buhler High School gymnasium starts at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m.
Buhler Crusader basketball squads split with Goddard
The Buhler Crusaders boys and girls split their games with Goddard Tuesday night at the Buhler High School gymnasium.
The Buhler girls held on for a 51-46 victory over the Lions, who outscored the Crusaders 16-7 in the fourth quarter. The Buhler boys dropped a 56-50 decision to the Lions.
The Crusader girls improved to 2-0. The Buhler boys are 1-1.
The Buhler girls led the Lions 16-12 at the end of the first quarter and 27-18 at halftime. The Crusaders outscored Goddard 17-12 in the third period for 44-30 lead.
In the varsity boys game, Goddard led 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. Buhler outscored the Lions 14-11 in the second quarter to lead at halftime 23-21.
Goddard outscored Buhler 24-12 in the third quarter for a 45-35 lead. Buhler closed the gap with a 15-11 fourth period.
Buhler will play Reno County rival Hutchinson on Friday night. The girls game at the Buhler High School gymnasium starts at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:30 p.m.
Goddard won the junior varsity boys game 56-38.
Buhler won the freshman boys game over Goddard 58-55.
The Buhler girls C team defeated Goddard 56-17.
Hutchinson boys, girls wrestling teams fall to Great Bend
The Hutchinson High School varsity boys and varsity girls wrestling teams dropped duals to Great Bend Tuesday at the Great Bend High School gymnasium.
The Salthawk varsity boys lost 44-24 to the Panthers and the Hutchinson varsity girls fell 66-16.
The Salthawk varsity girls will compete Friday and Saturday at Great Bend, the varsity boys compete in the Colby Invitational Friday and Sarturday and the junior varsity boys compete Saturday at Goddard.
Halstead girls win, Dragon boys fall at Marion Tournament
The Halstead girls basketball team defeated the Wichita Homeschool squad 61-33 on the second day of the Marion Tournament Tuesday afternoon.
The Halstead girls led 15-9 at the end of the first quarter, 37-16 at halftime and 53-27 at the end of the third quarter. The Dragons outscored Wichita 8-6 in the fourth quarter.
The Halstead boys basketball team lost to Wichita Homeschool 81-53.
Halstead led 13-10 at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 30-13 in the second quarter and trailed at halftime 40-26.
Wichita led 58-36 at the end of the third quarter and outscored the Dragons 23-17 in the fourth quarter.
The Halstead girls and boys play Conway Springs at 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
The third-place girls and girls games will be played at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by the girls championship at 4 p.m. and the boys championship at 5:30 p.m.
Sterling boys, girls swept by Great Bend at Kingman Classic
The Sterling boys and girls basketball team were swept by Great Bend Tuesday in the first round of the Kingman Classic.
The Great Bend boys, ranked fourth in Kansas Class 5A, edged the Sterling Black Bears 62-61 and the Panther girls squad defeated Sterling 54-36. The Sterling boys are ranked second in Kansas Class 2A.
The Kingman Classic will continue Thursday and Saturday.
Nickerson boys, girls drop Keady Classic openers
The Nickerson boys basketball team lost to Holcomb 66-52 and the Panther girls fell to the Holcomb Longhorns 66-21 Monday at the Larned Keady Classic.
The Nickerson girls play St. John at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Keady Classic, followed by the Nickerson boys vs. Bucklin at 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday night area prep basketball scores
In area girls basketball games Tuesday, Fairfield defeated Otis-Bison 52-37 and Pretty Prairie defeated Flinthills 57-55 on Tuesday.
The Pretty Prairie girls also defeated the Reno County Sabres 44-19 on Monday.
In area boys basketball games Tuesday night, Hutchinson Trinity Catholic lost to Wellington 78-67 and Inman lost to Moundridge 66-30.
KBCA Rankings Week 2: Sterling boys ranked 2nd in Class 2A
Sterling is ranked second in Class 2A boys in the latest (Week 2) Kansas Basketball Coaches Association high school poll released on Tuesday.
Great Bend is ranked fourth in Class 5A boys.
McPherson is ranked fifth and Andale is ranked seventh in Class 4A girls.
Halstead is ranked No. 3 in Class 3A girls, Cheney is fourth and Haven is ranked fifth. Hutchinson Central Christian is ranked 10th in Eight-Man Division II girls.
The No. 1-ranked boys teams are Shawnee Mission Northwest, Class 6A; Kapaun-Mount Carmel, Class 5A; McPherson, Class 4A; Wichita Collegiate, Class 3A; Moundridge, Class 2A; Montezuma-South Gray, Class 1A Division I; and Cunningham, Class 1A Division II.
The No. 1 girls teams are Overland Park-Blue Valley North, Class 6A; Topeka Seaman, Class 5A; Wellington, Class 4A; Hesston, Class 3A; Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan, Class 2A; Little River, Class 1A Division I; and Hanover, Class 1A Division II.
Area athletes make Wichita Eagle preseason basketball list
The Wichita Eagle released its preseason lists for Top 100 girls basketball players and Top 100 boys basketball players.

Area football players named to KFCA, Sports in Kansas all-state teams
Hutchinson High School senior Terrell King was named to the Kansas Football Coaches Association All-State Team in Class 5A at defensive back.
Four Buhler players were to the Class 4A All-State Team: Body Redenbaugh, offensive line; Mitchel McDaniel, athlete; Cruz Hershberger, defensive line; and Will Hanen, linebacker.
Haven’s Van Loop made the KFCA All-State Team at running back.
King and senior Kade Smith were named to the Sports in Kansas Class 5A All-State Team at defensive back and running back.
Hutchinson’s Skyler Ray, Taysen Runyon, Jaiden May were named honorable mention.
McDaniel, Redenbaugh and Hanen made the SIK 4A All-State Team.
Buhler’s Hershberger, Tanner Brown, Nick Gazaway, Quentin Pasano, Jacob Miller and Logan Turner are honorable mention selections.
Area wrestlers ranked by KWCA
Several Hutchinson Tribune area wrestlers are ranked in the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association poll released on Tuesday.
• Hutchinson senior Kade Smith is ranked first in Class 5A boys at 165 pounds and sixth in All-Class boys at 157 pounds.
• Haven senior Jacob Moore is ranked first in Class 321A boys at 126 pounds.
• Hutchinson sophomore Cruz Cannon is ranked fourth in Class 5A boys at 113 pounds.
• Haven junior Tanner Loghrie is ranked fifth in Class 321A at 132 pounds.
• Lyons sophomore Jace Grizzle is ranked fourth in 321A boys at 150 pounds.
