Buhler team 5th, Paulsrud 9th at Class 4A girls state golf

Buhler High School’s Anika Paulsrud earned the ninth-place medal at the Kansas Class 4A girls state tournament at the Hesston Golf Course Tuesday.

Paulsrud fired an 86 Monday and added a 77 on Tuesday for a 163 score.

Buhler placed fifth in the team standings with a 744 score.

Buhler’s Addison Specht tied for 29th at 192 (95-97), Macy Miller tied for 37th at 199 (104-95) and Juliette Shank placed 42nd at 203 (103-92). Harlie Terrell (101-107) and Paityn Weber (98-110) tied for 43rd at 208.

Wamego’s Addison Douglass won the 4A girls state tournament first-place medal with a 142 score (70-72).

Douglass won her third straight state title by 10 strokes over second-place finisher Lilli Simpson of Winfield, who posted a two-day score of 152 (76-76).

Topeka Hayden won its second straight 4A state title with a 698 score, followed by Wellington 713, McPherson 727 and Augusta 729. Baldwin placed sixth with a 754 score.

In the Kansas Class 5A girls state golf tournament at the Salina Municipal Golf Course, Hutchinson High School’s Ava Burlie tied for 26th place with a two-day, 36-hole score of 179.

Burlie was the only Salthawk golfer to qualify for the second round. Burlie shot an 87 in the first round and 92 in the second round. She was in 23rd place after the first round.

The Salthawks posted a 406 score in the first round. Lily Rodriguez was 58th with a 100, Lydia Patterson was 76th with a 109 and Brynn Hall was 77th with a 110.

Kapaun Mount Carmel won the 5A girls state title with a 639 score. The Crusaders won their fifth straight championship.

St. James Academy placed second with a 647 score, followed by St. Thomas Aquinas 693. Blue Valley Southwest 697, Bishop Carroll 698 and Topeka Seaman 706.

Kapaun’s Ximena Sarinana captured the first-place medal with a 142 score (73-69). She defended her state title from last year.

In the Class 3-1A girls state tournament at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course, Pretty Prairie’s Jewelynn Reese placed 69th in the first round and did not make the cut for the second round.

Rawlins County’s Amelia Bowles edged out Wichita Collegiate’s Margaret Ulrich 147-148 for the state title.

Ulrich just missed her fourth straight state title while playing at three different schools. Ulrich won the 3-2-1A state title at Hesston as a freshman, a 5A state title with Hutchinson as a sophomore and went back to Hesston for the 3-2-1A state title with Hesston as a junior.

Pittsburg Colgan won the 3-1A team title. Silver Lake was second, followed by Goodland, Jefferson West and Caney Valley.

In the Kansas Class 6A girls state tournament at Carey Park in Hutchinson, Maize High School senior Kinslea Jones won her fourth state championship with a two-day score of 3-under-par 139 (70-69).

Jones, who shot a state-record 58 at the Buhler Invitational at the Hesston Golf Course on Sept. 27, joined Blue Valley West’s Julia Misemer (2018-21) and Columbus’ Jill Simpson (1992-95) as the only members of the KSHSAA 4-Timers Club. She will play golf at the University of Kansas next year.

Manhattan won the 6A state team title with a two-day score of 593, followed by Shawnee Mission East 622, Washburn Rural 655, Maize 671, Blue Valley North 676 and Blue Valley West 703.

Hutchinson Salthawk varsity boys soccer team falls to Salina South

The Hutchinson High School varsity boys soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Salina South Tuesday night at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

The score was tied 0-0 at halftime.

Salina South improved to 12-2 and Hutchinson dropped to 10-2-2. Maize South (12-2) is No. 1 in the KSHSAA 5A West Regional standings, followed by Salina South, Topeka West (12-2), Hutchinson and Bishop Carroll (10-5-1).

Hutchinson plays Campus/Clearwater (6-8) at Haysville Thursday. Salina South hosts Maize (4-8-2).

The Hutchinson Salthawks’ junior varsity boys soccer team and Salina South were tied 0-0 at halftime. Hutchinson scored one goal in the second half for a 1-0 victory.

Hutchinson, Buhler volleyball teams get regional opponents

The Hutchinson High School volleyball team (16-17) is the No. 13 seed for the Class 5A West regional at Site D Andover Central.

The Salthawks will play No. 4 seed Andover Central (29-6) at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by the matchup between No. 5 Kapaun Mount Carmel (28-7) against No. 12 seed Salina South (20-16).

Buhler (20-16) is the No. 8 seed in the Class 4A West regional at Clay Center. The Crusaders will play Mulvane (17-14) in the semifinals. Clay Center (34-3) is the overall No. 1 seed and will play the winner of the Augusta (6-28)-El Dorado (4-28) play-in match.

The semifinal winners play for the right to compete in the 4A state tournament.

Hutchinson Trinity volleyball season ends with regional loss

The Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School volleyball team posted 1-2 record Monday night in the Kansas Class 2A Regional Quad 3 tournament at Valley Heights High School in Blue Rapids.

The Celtics lost to Hillsboro 25-13, 25-12 and Valley Heights 25-18, 25-17. Trinity defeated Ell-Saline 25-13, 25-19.

Valley Heights defeated Hillsboro 25-17, 25-23 and Hillsboro defeated Ell-Saline 25-11, 25-16.

The first- and second-place teams, Valley Heights and Hillsboro, advanced to Class 2A sub-state play.

Inman hosted Class 2A Quad A and went 3-0 for the regional title. The Teutons defeated Solomon 25-8, 25-4, Berean Academy 25-15, 25-18 and Wabaunsee 25-12, 25-13.

Berean Academy placed second. The Warriors defeated Wabaunsee 25-21, 25-9 and Solomon 25-21, 25-23. Wabaunsee defeated Solomon 25-21, 25-23.

Class 2A sub-states start on Saturday.

Halstead wins 3A regional volleyball title Monday, will host 3A sub-state

Halstead won the Kansas 3A regional Quad A tournament at Halstead Monday with a 3-0 record and advanced to the substate round.

Dragons’ senior setter Dalaina Schutte passed the 2,000 career assist mark.

Halstead (34-2) defeated Belle Plaine 25-6, 25-8, Chaparral 25-5, 25-17 and Caney Valley 25-6, 25-8.

Caney Valley (22-15) was the regional runner-up with a 2-1 record. Caney Valley defeated Chaparral 25-18, 19-25, 25-22 and Belle Plaine 25-18, 25-18. Chaparral defeated Belle Plaine 25-13, 25-15.

Halstead will host a sub-state starting on Saturday and will be the No. 1 seed.

In one semifinal match, the Dragons will play No. 4 Southeast of Saline at 2 p.m., followed by No. 2 Trinity Academy vs. No. 3 Hesston (starts 20 minutes after the Halstead-Southeast of Saline match concludes).

The semifinal winners will play in the championship match (which starts 20 minutes after the second semifinal match concludes) 

In the Kansas Class 3A regional at Wichita Trinity Academy, Haven finished third with a 1-2 record and Nickerson was fourth at 0-3. Neither team advanced to the sub-state round.

Wichita Trinity Academy (25-4) placed first at 3-0 and Garden Plain (25-10) was second at 2-1, and advanced to sub-state play.

Wichita Trinity Academy defeated Nickerson 25-9, 25-15, Haven 25-17, 25-19 and Garden Plain 25-12, 25-12. Garden Plain defeated Haven 25-13, 25-16 and Nickerson 21-25, 25-14, 25-23.

Haven defeated Nickerson 25-23, 20-25, 25-21.

Haven finished the season with a 15-21 record and Nickerson finished the season 12-26.

HutchCC’s Kollin Collier named KJCC Defensive Player of the Week

Hutchinson Community College football player Kollin Collier was named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Defensive Player of the Week for Week 8.

Collier became the first Blue Dragon since last season to have multiple interceptions in a game with two picks in number one Hutchinson’s 40-17 victory over No. 12 Coffeyville.

Both of Collier’s interceptions eventually led to Blue Dragon touchdowns and his interception in the left corner of the end zone prevented a Red Raven potential score.

Collier had four total tackles, one pass defended and a tackle for loss.

Hutchinson running back Waymond Jordan Jr. was nominated or Offensive Player of the Week. He already has won the award three times this season.

Blue Dragon L.J. Lynch was nominated for Special Teams Player of the Week.

Hutchinson’s Katharina Marx shared KJCCC Division I women’s soccer Player of the Week honor

Hutchinson Community College sophomore forward Katharina Marx shared KJCCC Player of the Week honors with Garden City goalkeeper Leydaly Enriquez.

Marx had a game-winning goal and three overall points as No. 16 Hutchinson ran its unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2) with a 2-0 win over Barton and a 1-1 road draw with No. 7-ranked Kansas City Kansas.

Marx had a goal and an assist in pacing the Blue Dragons in a home win over the Cougars.

Hutchinson’s Marina Lopez was nominated for Goalkeeper of the Week. She has already won the award once.
