Buhler’s Sofia Spies places 2nd at 4A girls state tennis

Buhler High School freshman Sofia Spies placed second at the Kansas Class 4A girls state tennis tournament at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka.

Spies, the No. 2 seed in the singles bracket, lost to Topeka Hayden’s Ainzley Zulueta 6-0, 6-0 in the championship match Saturday. Spies posted a 32-4 record.

Zulueta completed a 24-0 season and did not drop a game in postseason play.

After receiving a first-round bye, Spies defeated Chanute’s Leah Burnett in the second round 6-1, 6-0 and defeated Abbie Gorman in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-0.

Spies defeated Winfield’s Sophia Heger in the semifinals Saturday 6-1, 6-3.

Buhler senior Ashlyn Coker (14-11) lost 6-2, 6-1 in the first round and lost in the consolation round 8-5.

The Buhler doubles team of Addison Caywood-Emily Allen won in the first round 6-4, 7-6 (6-4), lost in the second round 6-1, 6-0, won their first consolation match 8-4 over Buhler teammates Katelyn Harding-Kylee Bradshaw. Caywood-Allen lost their second consolation match 8-6.

Harding-Bradshaw lost in their first-round match 6-2, 6-0.

Topeka Hayden won the 4A state team title with 30 points. There was a three-way tie for second place as Buhler, Independence and McPherson all tallied 16 points. Winfield placed fifth with 11 points.

The Hutchinson High School seniors double team of Ayla Booe and Ellie Foos posted a 1-2 record at the Class 5A girls state tennis tournament Friday at the Andover District Tennis Complex.

Booe and Foos won in the first round 6-2, 6-4, lost in the second round 6-1, 6-3 and lost in the consolation round 8-2.

Booe and Foos finished the season with a 22-10 record.

In the Class 3-1A state tournament at Wichita’s Riverside Tennis Center, Hutchinson Trinity Catholic’s Ava Madden lost 6-5, 6-3 in the first round, but bounced back to win her first consolation match 8-3.

Madden lost her second consolation match 8-1. She finished the season with an 18-12 record.

Smoky Valley beats Nickerson 36-13

The Nickerson Panthers fell to the Smoky Vally Vikings 36-13 Friday night at Nickerson.

The Vikings led at halftime 22-7.

Nickerson plays its final regular season at Wichita Trinity Academy next Friday.

Reno County Sabres fall to Burlingame in high-scoring contest

The Burlingame Bearcats outscored the Reno County Sabres 36-14 in the fourth quarter en route to a 94-48 Friday night at Burlingame.

Burlingame improved to 7-0 and handed the Sabres their first loss. Reno County fell to 6-1.

The game ended with 2:11 left on the clock in the fourth quarter.

Burlingame is a city of 971 people located 20 miles south of Topeka in Osage County.

The Bearcats led 16-14 after on quarter, 44-26 at halftime and 58-34 after three quarters.

As you can see by the quarter-by-quarter scoring, the game started off going back and forth,” said Reno County coach Lee Smith. “Burlingame just gradually took the lead over the second and third quarters. Burlingame forced three turnovers in those quarters.”

Reno County sophomore quarterback Bo Smith completed 24-of-32 passes for 262 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. He also rushed for 161 yards on 30 carries and scored six touchdowns.

Sophomore Laurence Cable caught 7 passes for 107 yards and 1 touchdown. Junior Bruce Kingsley caught 7 passes for 76 yards. Senior Brecken Guthrie caught 4 passes for 61 yards.

“We will play Eureka (5-2) in 11 man next week, and then our season will be finished,” Smith said. “We just play the eight games on our schedule with no playoffs or anything like that.”

In next week’s final regular-season matchups, Hutchinson plays at Maize South, Haven hosts Kingman, Hutchinson Central Christian hosts Norwich, Hutchinson Trinity Catholic hosts Sterling, Buhler hosts McPherson, Burrton plays at Cunningham, Fairfield hosts Stafford, Halstead hosts Lyons, Inman hosts Moundridge and Pretty Prairie plays at Argonia-Attica.

Salina South 42, Haysville Campus 23

The Salina South football team defeated Haysville Campus 42-23 to snap a 30-game losing streak.

Both Salina South and Campus lost to Hutchinson. The Salthawks defeated Salina South 47-0 in a Week 4 game Sept. 27 and defeated Campus 50-0 on Oct. 11.
