About the only suspense left in Friday night’s Hutchinson-Newton football game was whether Hutchinson’s defense would record another shutout.
Hutchinson’s defense posted its fifth shutout of the season with a 56-0 victory over the Newton Railers.
The Salthawks tied a school record for shutouts set in 1945. Hutchinson defensive coordinator/assistant Scott Yantes coached in his 224th game with the Salthawks. The Hutchinson defense held the Railers to minus 1 yard rushing and 53 yards passing.
“I’m proud of them (the Hutchinson defensive players),” said Hutchinson High School football coach Mike Vernon during his postgame radio interview. “These games are kind of tough. We have a very talented group of kids in the second group and we wanted the shutout.”
Smith and Terrell King each scored three touchdowns in the first quarter as Hutchinson improved its record to 5-2 with a victory over the undermanned Railers, who fell to 0-7.
By agreement of the two coaching staffs, a running clock was used once the score reached 42-0 in the second quarter.
On the first series of the game, Smith scored on a 32-yard touchdown run at the 9:14 mark of the first quarter. The touchdown was set up by a 27-yard run by senior Terrell King and a 16-yard run by Jeremyah Gaitho-Karanu.
King scored on a 33-yard touchdown on the next series for the Salthawks and Hutchinson led 14-0.
Smith sprinted 79 yards for his second touchdown of the game (and Hutchinson’s third TD). Taysen Runyon kicked his third extra point for a 21-0 Hutchinson lead. 7:49
Hutchinson got the ball back on a Carter Morgan interception. Morgan has four interceptions this season, including two pick-6s.
King scored on a 14-yard touchdown run (set up by his 36-yard running play) and Runyon booted his fourth PAT kick for a 28-0 lead with 6:15 left in the fourth quarter.
Smith sprinted down the sidelines for a 91-yard touchdown with 3:18 left in the first quartet. Runyon’s fifth PAT kick made the score 35-0.
After the Salthawks recovered a fumble at the Newton 5-yard line, King scored his third touchdown on a 5-yard run. Runyon’s PAT kick made the score 42-0.
Hutchinson’s Trevyr Clark intercepted a Newton pass on the next series and the clock ran out on the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Runyon kicked field goals of 19 and 47 yards to make the score 48-0 Hutchinson. That was the score at halftime.
Hutchinson took a 56-0 lead on a 43-yard touchdown run by freshman Larry Jeremiah and a 2-point conversion by Max Harris. That was the score at the end of the third quarter.
Smith rushed for 205 yards on just four carries (three touchdowns). King rushed for 112 yards on just 6 carries (three touchdowns). Jeremiah had 70 yards rushing on 6 carries (one touchdown). Harris rushed for 24 yards on 10 carries. Gaitho Karanu rushed for 16 yards on 2 carries.
Hutchinson rushed for 401 yards and did not attempt a pass.
Smith went over the 1,000-yard mark on his first carry of the game. He now has 1193 yards rushing and 10 touchdown for the season. He averages 8.5 yards per carry. King has 277 yards rushing, Gaitho Karanu 142 and Harris 104.
Runyon is 3-of-6 on field goals and 22-of-25 on extra points for 31 points.
Newton quarterback Caden Unruh completed 4-of-13 passes for 53 yards and 2 interceptions. Kingston Henry rushed for 30 yards on 11 carries, but Newton had five players combine for minus 42 yards.
The Salthawks will play a road game at Maize South (5-2) next Friday to wrap up the regular season. Maize South began the season 5-0. However the Mavericks lost to Maize 55-30 on Oct. 11 and Derby 51-7 Friday night.
With the win over Maize South, Derby won the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I title.
“They’re the ones (Maize South) who knocked us out of the playoffs last year,” Vernon said. “The game is extremely important next week.”
The Salthawk football team celebrated Senior Night. Seniors on the Hutchinson squad are Terrell King, Levi Kepler, Spencer Riggs, Taushaun Govain, Carter Morgan, Mitchell Rice, Taysen Runyon, Kevin Wilson, Trevyr Clark, Kade Smith, Dean Garrett, Skylar Ray, Kaleb Cape, Manuel Mora and Brayton Hammond.
Buhler 21, Winfield 7
In a low-scoring game Friday night at Winfield, the Buhler Crusaders edged the Winfield Vikings 21-7 to improve to 6-2.
The game was scoreless in the first half.
In the third quarter, Buhler cracked the scorebook on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Brendan Scripsick to Nick Gazaway. Jacob Miller kicked the extra point.
Scripsick connected with Miller on another touchdown pass with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter and Miller’s PAT kick made the score 14-0.
Winfield scored a touchdown and kicked the extra point to cut Buhler’s lead to 14-7 with 8:30 left in the game.
Mitchel McDaniel scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:59 left in the game to seal the victory for the Crusaders. Miller’s PAT kick was good for the final 21-7 margin.
Haven 42, Chaparral 7
The Haven Wildcats improved to 6-2 with a 42-7 victory over Chaparral Friday night at Chaparral.
Haven had 381 yards total offense (136 passing and 245 rushing) and held the Roadrunners to 131 total yards (104 passing and 27 rushing).
Haven quarterback Nash Wray passed for 136 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 64 yards and 1 touchdown to lead the Wildcats.
Vance Loop rushed for 102 yards on 17 carries and scored 2 touchdowns (on runs of 1 and 5 yards). He also had 1 catch for 7 yards.
Cole Brawner rushed for 50 yards on 9 carries, including a 30-yard run. Brogan Wray scored on a 14-yard run.
Nash Wray’s touchdown passes war for 7 yards to Grant Patry (who caught 2 passes for 40 yards), 40 yards to Chandler Ingold (his only catch) and 49 yards to Aiden Hoopes (who caught 2 passes for 55 yards).
Kolton Atwater was 6-for-6 in PAT kicks.
Patry led the Wildcats in tackles with 8 (including 2 tackles for loss). Dakota Arndt and Jaxson Wilder each made 6 stops. Maddix Finecy had 5 tackles. Nash Wray and Altvater each had interceptions.
Southeast of Saline 38, Halstead 15
The Halstead Dragons fell to Southeast of Saline 38-15 Friday night at Gypsum.
The Southeast of Saline Trojans led at halftime 14-0.
Halstead’s Joey Millspaugh scored on a 37-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Carlos Martinez kicked the extra point. The Dragons scored another touchdown with 2-point conversion.

Hutchinson varsity boys soccer team ties McPherson 1-1 in overtime
The Hutchinson High School varsity boys soccer team tied the McPherson Bullpups 1-1 in overtime Thursday night at McPherson.
McPherson led at halftime 1-0.
The Salthawk JV boys won their match 5-1.
The Salthawk boys soccer team handed Maize a 2-0 loss Tuesday night at the Salhawk Soccer Complex.
Hutchinson led at halftime 1-0 on a goal by senior Landon Nusser on an assist from sophomore Griffin Galyon. Galyon scored the second Hutchinson goal on an assist from Nusser.
Juniors Jair Maciel and Jason Prichard sparked the midfield and backline as they shut down the Maize Eagles’ attack. Hutchinson junior goalkeeper Gael Parra recorded his fourth shutout of the season.
The Hutchinson junior varsity soccer team tied Maize 1-1. The Salthawks and Eagles were tied 0-0 at halftime.
Sophomore Tate England scored Hutchinson’s goal on an assist from sophomore Maks Dreiling.
Hutchinson hosts Salina South on Tuesday and wraps up regular season play Oct. 24 against Campus/Clearwater.
Buhler volleyball team sweeps Senior Night quad
During Senior Night Thursday at Jim Baker Fieldhouse, the Buhler Hugh School volleyball team swept a triangular with Rose Hill (25-14, 25-16) and Circle (25-18, 25-18).
The Crusaders (16-15) remain unbeaten in Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division 3 play and captured the league title for the first time in 20 years.
Buhler senior Breann Ruder joined the Kansas high school volleyball 2,000-assist club.
On her way to breaking the most kills in a season (360), junior Emerson Waldren is one kill short of beating this school record.
Buhler lost to Wellington 25-20, 25-23 and defeated McPherson 22-15, 25-22, 28-26 Tuesday night. McPherson defeated Wellington 25-12, 23-25, 25-23.
Buhler concludes the regular season at Abilene on Saturday.
Salthawk volleyball team 0-2 at home triangular
The Hutchinson High School volleyball team dropped two matches Tuesday night at the Salthawk Activities Center.
Hutchinson lost to Valley Center 25-19, 25-17 and Maize South 27-25, 25-20.
Senior libero/outside hitter Grace Posch reached a milestone during Tuesday’s match. Posch now has 1,000 digs for her career.
The Salthawks’ record is 16-17. Hutchinson plays at Maize Tuesday to wrap up the regular season.
Hutchinson freshman volleyball team 1-2 at home quad
The Hutchinson High School freshman girls hosted a quadrangular Thursday at the Salthawk Activities Center
Hutchinson lost to Derby 20-25, 25-7, 19-17, defeated Arkansas City 25-22, 14-25, 15-11 and lost to Andover Central 25-11, 26-24.
Hutchinson bowlers compete in Unified Bowling Meet Day
Cooper Oller, Jace Cross and Mya Tipton teamed up to place third with a 668 score and a third-pace finish at the Unified Bowling Meet Day Tuesday at The Alley in Hutchinson.
Oller, Cross and Tipton placed third out of 20 teams. The previous highest score for the past two years was in the low 500s.
The other four Hutchinson team finishes were 10th place 474, 14th place 436, 15th place 386 and 18th place 342.
Halstead Dragons volleyball team 33-2 entering postseason
Halstead (3A) finished the season 33-2 clinching the CKL preseason tourney and regular season championship.
The Dragons have the top record in class 3A against one of the toughest schedules in the state going 12-2 vs ranked opponents.
Buhler soccer team rolls past El Dorado
The Buhler High School boys soccer team blasted El Dorado 11-0 on Senior Night Tuesday at Crusader Field.
Buhler improved its record to 6-6-2 and plays Thursday at Salina South and next Tuesday at Elbing-Berean Academy.
Pretty Prairie golfer Jewelynn Reese qualifies for 3-1A state tournament
Pretty Prairie High School’s Jewelynn Reese finished 10th with a 108 score at the Kansas Class 3-1A golf regional at Cheney’s Cherry Oaks Golf Course.
Reese qualified for the Class 3-1A state tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.
Nickerson’s Hannah Heinz tied for 21st with a 127 score and teammate Jillian Hartman tied for 38th with a 149.
Hays-Thomas More Prep-Marian won the team title with a 407 score, followed by Hesston 429, Larned 436, Cheney 442, Kingman 494, Garden Plain 533, Hoisington 558 and Plainville 562.
The top three teams (TMP, Hesston and Larned) and top five lowest lowest individual scores that are not members a qualifying team will qualify for the state tournament. All ties for the sixth spot will advance to state.
Larned’s Erin Tins won the regional individual title with a 94. TMP placed three golfers in the top six (Brynn Schoepf placed second 96, Jenna Bull was third 98 and Emma Wasinger was sixth 102).

Inman volleyball team defeats Ell-Saline, Pratt-Skyline in double duals
The Inman High School volleyball team defeated Ell-Saline twice Tuesday night in a double dual at Inman and improved to 32-2.
The Teuton varsity won 25-13, 25-4 and 25-10, 25-17.
The Inman JV lost 25-20, 16-25, 15-10 and the C team won 25-21, 18-16.
In a double dual Thursday night at home, Inman defeated Pratt-Skyline 25-16, 25-13 and 25-11, 25-17. The JV won 25-11, 25-19. The C team won the first set against Pratt-Skyline 27-25 and lost the second set 15-10.
The Teutons recognized seniors Brooke Aden and Dakota Nees.
Inman is the No. 1 seed and will host a Class 2A regional volleyball tournament at 4 p.m. on Monday. The Teutons will host Solomon, Berean Academy and Alma-Wabaunsee.
The Inman JV will host a tournament on Saturday against Berean Academy JV, Remington, Marion, Berean C team and Hesston.
Th Inman Junior High School volleyball team competes in the Heart of America League Middle School Tournament Saturday at Moundridge.
Hutchinson Central Christian is the top seed and receives a bye as does No. 2 seed Moundridge, No. 3 seed Marion and No. 4 seed Sterling.
Also competing are Hutchinson Trinity Catholic, Ell-Saline, Inman, Wichita Classical, Sedgwick, Bennington, Remington and Berean Academy.
