Blue Dragon volleyball team sweeps three sets from Garden City at home

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team took three sets from the Garden City Broncbusters Monday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons snapped a seven-match losing streak.

Hutchinson won a wild opening set 29-27 and held the Broncbusters to an .078 attack percentage. The Blue Dragons took the second set 25-22 and the third set 25-19.

The Blue Dragons’ record is 13-17 overall and 4-6 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. Garden City is 10-9 overall (4-6 in conference play).

The Blue Dragons will travel to Concordia next Saturday to play the Thunderbirds of Cloud County Community College. The match starts at 3 p.m.

Next Monday, HutchCC hosts a quadrangular against Friends University JV, Neosho County Community College and McPherson College JV. The Blue Dragons will play those teams at 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Then Hutchinson plays three straight KJCCC home matches: Butler Community College on Oct. 23, Seward County Community College on Oct. 25 and Pratt Community College on Oct. 26. All three matches start at 6 p.m.

HutchCC wraps up the KJCCC season Oct. 30 at Barton Community College (6 p.m.) and Nov. 2 at Colby Community College (2 p.m.).

Garden City plays its next two matches at Conestoga Arena in Garden City. The Broncobusters host Cloud County at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Butler CC at 3 p.m. Saturday.

HutchCC golfers place 8th at Herb Wimberly Memorial

The No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team placed eighth at the 2024 Herb Wimberly Memorial Tournament at the 54-hole New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M.

The first 36 holes were played on Monday and the final 18 holes took place on Tuesday.

The Blue Dragons shot a 16-over par 868 for three rounds (293-284-291).

The Blue Dragons were paced by Charlie Box, who tied for 16th place with a 214 score (71-71-72). Jack Northgraves tied for 23rd at 215 (73-70-72), Louis Ross tied for 43rd at 219 (75-71-73), Jaydon Carruthers tied for 59th at 224 (74-72-78) and David Razinkas tied for 63rd at 225 (75-76-74).

Garden City, the other Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference entry in the tournament, tied for 10th with an 878 total (297-288-293). The Broncbusters tied for 10th with Western Texas College.

New Mexico State won the tournament title with a 27-under-par 825 total (273-276-276). Midland (Texas) CC placed second at 842, followed by Texas A&M Commerce 853, Incarnate Word 857, Odessa College 858, New Mexico JC 866 and South Mountain CC 968.

Weatherford College (Texas) placed 12th at 880, followed by Murray State College 893, Texas Southern 911 and New Mexico Military Institute 920.

HutchCC Blue Dragons No. 1 for sixth straight week

The Hutchinson Community College, which defeated Independence Community College 48-7 on the road Saturday, is the unanimous No. 1 team in the NJCAA Division I football poll with a 6-0 record.

Garden City (5-1) is ranked fifth, Butler Community College (3-2) is ranked 11th and Coffeyville (4-2) is ranked 12th.

Dodge City (4-3) dropped out of the Top 15 but still received votes.

No. 1 Hutchinson will play at No. 12 Coffeyville at 1 p.m. The Red Ravens are holding Homecoming festivities.

In other Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference games Saturday, Independence travels to Council Bluffs, Iowa, to play Iowa Western and Butler CC hosts Garden City at BG Products Veterans Sports Complex in El Dorado.

Highland Community College plays Benedictine College Sunday in Atchison.

HutchCC women’s soccer stays at No. 16

After a 1-0-1 week last week, the Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team remained No. 16 in the latest NJCAA Division I national rankings released on Monday.

The Blue Dragons are 4-0-1 in their last five games after a 0-0 draw with No. 8 Butler and a dominant 3-0 road victory over Coffeyville on Saturday.

This week will prove to be a equally challenging week as Barton comes to the Salthawk Soccer Complex for a 6 p.m. match on Saturday. 

Hutchinson then travels to KJCCC leader and nationally seventh-ranked Kansas City on Saturday.

The KJCCC continues to have four teams in the Top 20.
