Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School senior Ava Madden placed fifth at the Kansas 3-2-1A girls tennis regional Saturday at Conway Springs.
Madden, who was the No. 7 seed for the regional, will take a 17-10 record to the state tournament.
She received a first-round bye, won her second-round match 6-2, 6-3, lost in the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-0, won her consolation match 7-6 (2), 6-2 and won the fifth-pace 6-1, 6-0.
Trinity’s Michelle Koehler lost her first-round regional singles match 8-4.
The Trinity doubles teams of Aissa Lorden-Hazel Wuertz and Lindyn Nelson-Bianca Salazar also competed at regionals. Both won their first round matches and lost in the second tround.
The Class 3-1A state girls tennis tournament is next Friday and Saturday at Wichita’s Riverside Tennis Complex.
The Hutchinson High School doubles team of Ayla Booe and Ellie Foos qualified for the Class 5A state girls tennis tournament by placing third at the 5A regional Saturday at Salina Central.
Booe is a three-time state qualifier and Foos is a two-time state qualifier.
Booe and Foos won their first match 6-2, 7-6 (2), their quarterfinal match 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 and lost in the semifinals 6-0, 6-0.
Booe and Foos won the third-place match by injury default over Natalie Hershberger and Carlie Franz of Newton.
Hutchinson’s Rylee Miller was the No. 13 seed in singles. She lost her first-round match to Great Bend’s Paige Stacey 6-2, 6-0.
Hutchinson’s Maggie Kaplan lost her first round singles match 6-0, 6-0 to Emporia’s Kali Keough.
The Hutchinson doubles team of Addie Lewis and Payzlee Regier were the No. 12 seed. Lewis and Regier lost their first-round match 6-4, 6-3 to Newton’s Mara Oswald and Charlotte Kost 6-4, 6-3.
The 5A state girls tournament is next Friday and Saturday at the Andover District Tennis Complex.
Hutchinson Salthawk volleyball team 5th at McPherson Tournament
The Hutchinson High School varsity volleyball team placed fifth at the McPherson Tournament Saturday by beating Salina South 25-20, 12-25, 25-13 in the fifth-place match.
Hutchinson defeated Wichita Heights in the consolation semifinals 25-8, 25-18.
In Pool B play, the Salthawks (16-15 overall) lost to Garden Plain 25-21, 8-25, 25-20 and Garden City 25-15, 25-27, 25-21. Hutchinson defeated Nickerson 25-16, 25-22. Hutchinson placed third in pool play and Nickerson was fourth.
Nickerson also lost to Garden Plain 25-18, 25-16 and Garden City 26-28, 25-22, 25-21 in pool play.
The Panthers lost to Salina South 15-23, 15-25, 25-18 in the consolation round and defeated Wichita Heights 20-15, 25-16, 25-3 in the seventh-place match.
Bishop Carroll defeated McPherson 22-25, 25-18, 25-8 in the championship match.
Garden Plain defeated Garden City 25-22, 25-21 in the third-place match.
Hutchinson runners compete in Salina Central Invitational
Hutchinson High School cross country runners participated in the Salina Central Invitational Saturday morning at the Bill Burke Complex.
In the varsity girls 5,000-meter race (5K), Hutchinson sophomore Avery Tecklenburg placed 24th with time of 21 minutes, 43.1 seconds.
In the varsity boys 5K race, Hutchinson junior Lalo Rodriguez placed 44th with time of 18:42.27, junior Ethan Holmes placed 50th in 19:04.99. sophomore Aiden Koontz was 55th in 19:23.25.
In the junior varsity girls race, Salthawk sophomore Damaris Rodriguez was 14th in 24:43.94 and Victoria Parra was 26th in 26:16.74.
In the JV boys race, Hutchinson freshman Ryan Rudolph Penka placed 53rd in 21:54.8, junior Hunter Kalish was 70th in 25:28.24 and senior Peyton Homes was 71st in 26:39.34.
Halstead 2nd, Haven 4th at Hillsboro volleyball tourney
The Halstead High School volleyball team placed second and the Haven team fourth at the 31st annual Hillsboro Trojan Invitational Saturday.
Rock Creek won the tournament title with a 5-0 record, followed by Halstead 4-1, Hillsboro 3-2, Haven 2-3, Minneapolis 1-4 and Chapman 0-5.
Halstead defeated Haven 25-14, Hillsboro 25-22, 25-13, Chapman 25-14, 25-18 and Minneapolis 25-21, 25-18 and lost to Rock Creek 25-15, 21-25, 25-22.
Haven defeated Chapman 27-25, 29-27 and Minneapolis 25-20, 14-25, 25-20 and lost to Hillsboro 25-21, 25-6 and Rock Creek 25-23, 25-20.
Buhler football team routs El Dorado
The Buhler Crusader football team improved to 4-2 with a 68-8 victory over El Dorado Friday night at El Dorado.
The Crusaders led 34-0 after one quarter and 62-0 at halftime.
Buhler backup quarterback Asher Zachary threw for three touchdowns (out of 5 pass completions) and ran for one.
Max Harmony scored on touchdown runs of 19 and 43 yards. Jacob Miller caught a 13-yard touchdown pass and had a 10-yard Pick 6.
Buhler passed for 73 yards and rushed for 250. The Crusaders limited El Dorado to 106 total yards.
Zachary passed for 73 yards. Harmony rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Dylan Scripsick rushed for 80 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown run.
Noah Hays rushed for 23 yards and one touchdown. Asher McConnaughy had 21 yards rushing.
Nick Gazaway caught 2 passes for 46 yards (including a 33-yard touchdown) and 18 yards rushing.
Harmony, McConnaughy, Carter Jones, Brady Gotti and Jeremy Gentry each had 6 tackles. Cruz Hershberger had 5 tackles. Jaxon Pratt recorded 1 sack.
Buhler plays at Winfield next Friday and closes the regular-season at home Oct. 25 against McPherson.
Winfield lost to Wellington 63-29 Friday night and McPherson lost to Mulvane 35-21.
Reno County Sabres win first 11-man football game in school history
In the first 11-man football game ever played by Reno County Homeschool in their two years of existence, the Reno County Sabres defeated Douglass 16-15 Friday night at Douglass.
The Sabres improved to 6-0.
Reno County scored on its first play of the game on a 70-yard touchdown run by senior Brecken Guthrie. Douglass answered later in the first half and converted a 2-point conversion.
The halftime score was 8-8.
Douglass scored next and kicked the extra point to lead 15-8.
Reno County scored in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard touchdown run by Guthrie. The Sabres took the lead on a 2-point conversion pass from Bo Smith to Guthrie.
The Sabres ran out the clock on the last drive, converting a 4th-down-and-1 to end the game.
Sophomore Bo Smith completed 16-of-30 passes for 156 yards with two interceptions. He also ran for 43 yards on 14 carries.
Guthrie rushed for 125 yards on 10 carries and caught 3 passes for 57 yards.
Sophomore Jett Smith caught 6 passes for 51 yards. Junior Bruce Kingsley, caught 3 passes for 31 yards.
The Sabres play an 8-man game next Friday at Burlingame and wrap up the regular season with an 11-man game at Eureka on Oct. 25.
