Salthawks overpower Campus Colts

The Hutchinson High School Salthawks’ football team scored 35 points in the first quarter and overpowered the Campus Colts 50-0 Friday night at Colts Stadium in Haysville.

The Salthawk offense gained 346 yards in total yards and held the Colts to 13 yards in total offense.

Near the end of the second quarter, both coaches agreed to use a running clock for the rest of the game.

Hutchinson improved to 4-2 and Campus dropped to 0-6.

Hutchinson struck first on a 29-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Levi Kepler to Mitchell Rice. Taysen Runyon kicked the extra point and Hutchinson led 7-0 with 9:08 left in the first quarter.

After Hutchinson’s Deon Garrett recovered a Colts’ fumble at the 31-yard line. Three plays later, Jeremyah Gaitho Karanu scored the Salthawks’ second touchdown on an 18-yard run. Runyon’s PAT kick made the score 14-0 Hutchinson.

Campus fumbled again at the 7-yard line and Hutchinson recovered. Karmelo Green scored on the next play and Runyon booted the extra point for a 21-0 lead with 5:12 left in the first quarter.

Hutchinson’s Carter Morgan intercepted a Campus pass and ran 35 yards for a Pick-6 with 4:21 left in the fourth quarter. It was Morgan’s second Pick-6 of the season. Runyon’s PAT kick made the score 28-0.

After another Campus turnover, Kepler connected with Taishun Williams on a 49-yard touchdown pass with 2:32 left in the first quarter. Runyon’s fifth extra point kick made the score 35-0.

The Salthawks scored their sixth touchdown of the game on a 22-yard run by Karanu, who took the handoff from senior Terrell King out of the Wildcat formation. Runyon’s sixth PAT kick gave the Salthawks a 42-0 lead with 10:37 left in the second quarter.

Hutchinson sophomore running back Max Harris capped the Salthawks’ scoring with a 1-yard touchdown and a 2-point run with 2:50 left in the game, making the final result 50-0.

Harris led the Salthawks in rushing with 64 yards. Leading ball carrier Kade Smith only carried the ball twice as Hutchinson coach rested Smith and some other starters. Smith gained 33 yards.

Hutchinson hosts the Newton Railers next Friday. Newton lost to Andover 40-13 Friday night.

The Salthawks play their final regular-season game Oct. 25 at Maize South, which lost to Maize 55-30 Friday night.

Halstead 31, Ellsworth 13

The Halstead Dragons defeated Ellsworth 31-13 Friday night at Halstead.

In the first quarter, Halstead quarterback Braxton Creed threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Breeson Bigley and ran for a 34-yard touchdown. Carlos Martinez kicked both extra points.

Joey Millspaugh scored from 1-yard out and Martinez’ third PAT kick put Halstead ahead 21-7 with 8:45 left in the first quarter.

Ellsworth scored its second touchdown to cut the Dragons’ lead to 21-13 at halftime.

Martinez kicked a 35-yard field goal with 2:07 left in the third quarter to push the Dragons’ lead to 24-13. That was the score at the end of the third quarter.

With 2:29 left in the game, Creed connected with Millspaugh for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Martinez’ PAT kick made the final score 31-13.

Halstead plays Southeast of Saline at Gypsum next Friday and hosts Lyons on Oct. 25. Southeast of Saline defeated Hillsboro 36-8 Friday night.

Buhler 68, El Dorado 8

The Buhler Crusader football team improved to 4-2 with a 68-8 victory over El Dorado Friday night at El Dorado.

The Crusaders led 62-0 at halftime.

Buhler plays at Winfield next Friday and closes the regular-season at home Oct. 25 against McPherson. Winfield lost to Wellington 63-29 Friday night and McPherson lost to Mulvane 35-21.

Haven 49, Belle Plaine 7

The Haven Wildcats improved to 5-1 with a 49-7 victory over Belle Plaine Friday night at Belle Plaine.

Haven quarterback Nash Wray threw four touchdown passes, ran for another touchdown, passed for 197 yards and ran for 62.

Brogan Wray caught a touchdown pass and threw a touchdown pass. Vance Loop ran for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass and rushed for 101 yards.

Aiden Hoopes caught two touchdown passes and had 5 catches for 135 yards. Codi Schoenhoff caught a touchdown pass.

Haven rolled up 423 total yards (242 passing and 181 rushing).

Haven plays at Chaparral next Friday and hosts Kingman Oct. 25. Chaparral lost to Cheney 75-7 Friday night and Kingman lost to Garden Plain 38-21.

In other games involving area teams, Hutchinson Trinity Catholic defeated Ellinwood 26-15, Nickerson defeated Lyons 26-21, Reno County Sabres Homeschool defeated Douglass 16-15, Sterling lost to Conway Springs 41-14, Inman lost to Sedgwick 61-29 and Fairfield defeated Pretty Prairie 46-0.
