The No. 3-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team tied for seventh at the 54-hole Grier Jones Shocker Invitational Monday and Tuesday at the par-72 Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton.
The Blue Dragons shot 294 and 288 in the first two rounds on Monday and added a 3-over-par 291 score on Tuesday for a three-round score of 873. HutchCC tied Central Arkansas for seventh place.
Charlie Box tied for sixth place with a 214 score. Jayden Carruthers tied for 11th at 216, Louis Ross tied for 48th at 224, Jack Northgraves tied for 50th at 225 and David Razinkas tied for 58th with a 229.
Box, Northgraves and Ross shot 73s in the first round, Razinkas 75 and Carruthers 77.
In the second round, Carruthers fired a 4-under-par 68, Box 72, Ross 73, Northgraves 75 and Razinkas 80.
Box shot a 69 in the third round, Carruthers 71, Razinkas 74, Northgraves 77 and Ross 78.
Wichita State University won the tournament title with a 864 score (293-286-285), followed by Incarnate Word 868 (293-280-295), Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville 869 (296-279-294), Xavier University 869 (293-292-284), Midland Community College 870 (301-287-282) and the University of Denver 870 (290-291-289).
Northern Colorado placed ninth at 880 (298-288-294), followed by Indian Hills Community College 881 (300-285-296), Drake University 883 (301-294-288), Southern Indiana University 891 (305-287-299), Missouri State University 904 (311-297-296) and Dodge Community College 912 (307-298-307).
Xavier’s Kellen Dean edged out Oklahoma State’s Johnnie Clark for first place. Dean shot a 7-under-par 209 (73-68-70) and Clark shot 210 (69-73-68).
The top golfer for first-place Wichita State was Mitchell Revie, who tied for 11th place with a 216 score (76-71-69).
The HutchCC Blue Dragon golfers compete next at the Herb Wimberly Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at the University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M. The tournament will be hosted by New Mexico State University.
