The Hutchinson High School girls golf team placed third at the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I/II Girls Championship Monday at Sim Park golf course in Wichita.
Maize, which swept the top five individual medals led by three-time state champion Kinslea Jones with a 5-under-par 66, placed first with a 312 score.
Maize South placed second with a 381 score, followed by Hutchinson 383, Derby 406, Salina South 416 and Valley Center 449.
Hutchinson’s Ava Burlie placed seventh with an 89. Lydia Patterson tied for 13th with a 97, followed by Brynn Hall 15th at 98 and Lily Rodriguez 16th at 99.
Maize golfers Charlotte Kerbs, Emma Hays, Abigail Cavazos, Hadley Topping and Jayden Ramsey placed second, third, fourth, fifth and tied for eighth with 79, 83, 84, 86 and 91. Salina South’s Madison Durr finished sixth with an 87.
Blue Dragons top NJCAA I football poll for 5th straight week
The Hutchinson Community College football team (5-0) is the unanimous No. 1-ranked team in the NJCAA Division I poll for the fifth straight week.
The Blue Dragons defeated Dodge City 42-0 Saturday. The Conquistadors (3-3) dropped from No. 14 to receiving votes.
The Blue Dragons will play two straight KJCCC road games — next Saturday at Independence Community College and Oct. 19 at No. 14 Coffeyville Community College, which just entered the rankings for the first time.
HutchCC hosts No. 13 Butler Community College Oct. 26 and No. 15 Highland Community College on Nov. 9. The Blue Dragons wrap up the regular season Nov. 16 at No. 6 Garden City Community College.
Iowa Western (5-1, with the loss coming against HutchCC) is ranked no. 2, followed by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community (5-0), Georgia Military College (6-1) and Snow College (5-1).
Mississippi Gulf Coast and Georgia Military jumped head of Snow College after the Badgers suffered their first loss of the season.
Nos. 7-12 are Northwest Mississippi Community College (4-1), Holmes Community College (5-0), Kilgore College (4-1), Lackawanna College (4-2), Cisco College (3-1) and Jones College (3-2).
HutchCC soccer two jumps 2 spots to 16th in NJCAA Division I poll
The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team jumped from 18th to 16th in the NJCAA Division I Week 7 rankings released on Monday.
The Blue Dragons (7-2-3 overall) are one of four Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference teams ranked in the poll.
The others are Kansas City Kansas Community College (10-0-3), seventh; Butler Community College (9-1-3), eighth; and Cowley County Community College (7-2-1), 10th.
Navarro College (10-0-1) is ranked No. 1.
Halstead’s Millspaugh, Herman to play football at Friends
Halstead High School seniors Joey Millspaugh and Connor Herman have committed to sign letters of intent to play football at Friends University in Wichita.
Millspaugh, 6-foot, 185 pounds, rushed for 310 yards and one touchdown and caught 46 passes for 480 yards and four touchdowns as a junior. He also plays linebacker on defense.
Herman, 6-3, 265, plays the offensive and defensive lines. He also competes for the Halstead wrestling team.
Halstead coach Derek Racette is a 2011 Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School alumnus and a 2015 Friends University graduate who starred at quarterback for the Falcons. He was named to the Friends University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.
The Friends Falcons, ranked 22nd in NAIA Division I, defeated Sterling College 59-14 on Homecoming Saturday at Adair-Austin Stadium.
Hutchinson Central Christian volleyball team wins South Haven tourney
The Hutchinson Central Christian High School volleyball team went 5-0 and placed first at the South Haven Invitational Saturday.
The Cougars, who lost to matches at Hutchinson Trinity Catholic last Tuesday, defeated Caldwell (25-19, 25-16), Norwich (25-15, 25-23), Oxford (25-21, 22-25, 25-14), South Haven (15-20, 25-23) and Wichita Independent (25-11, 25-17).
The Cougars improved to 11-16 overall and moved into sixth place in the KSHSAA Class 1A Division II rankings.
Central Christian plays at Cunningham (8-12) on Tuesday.
Reno County Sabres rally to defeat Colony Crest
The Reno County Sabres homeschool football team came back from a 42-30 deficit to defeat Colony-Crest 46-42 Friday night in Colony and improved to 5-0.
Colony is located in Anderson County in East Central Kansas, 25 miles West of the Missouri state line.
Sabres’ senior Brecken Guthrie scored from 27 yards out for the go-ahead touchdown with 2:36 left in the game. That was the Sabres’ first lead.
Sophomore Laurence Cable sealed the victory on an interception as time expired.
Cable’s 40-yard touchdown reception pulled Sabres within 4 points at 42-38.
Reno County sophomore quarterback Bo Smith completed 15-of-26 passes for 216 yds and 4 touchdowns and rushed for 30 yards on 11 carries with 1 touchdown.
Guthrie rushed for 59 yards won 5 carries and caught 7 passes for 90 yards and 1 touchdown. Jett Smith caught 4 passes for 50 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cable caught 2 passes for 43 yards and 1 touchdown.
The Sabres play an 11-man football game next Friday at Douglass. Reno County plans an 8-man game Oct. 18 at Burlingame and an 11-man game Oct. 25 at Eureka.
Hutchinson Fairgrounds race winners: Chambers, Brown, Burkhart
The final races of the season took place Saturday night at the Kansas State Fairgrounds dirt race track in Hutchinson.
Henry Chambers won the A Modifieds feature race, Scott Brown won the Stock Cars division feature race and Peyton Burkhart won the B Modifieds feature competition.
Modified heat winners were Chambers, Chevy Coleman and Jake Nightingale. Stock car heat winners were Brown and Dylan Holt. B Modified heat winners were Burkhart and Tyler Kidwell.
