The No. 1 Hutchinson Blue Dragons football team opened Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference play by beating No. 14 Dodge City 42-0 Saturday afternoon at Gowans Stadium.

Hutchinson, which has outscored its last two opponents 141-0, improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the KJCCC.

The Hutchinson defense sacked Dodge City quarterbacks seven times (3 by K.J. Henson), forced four turnovers and held the Conquistadors to 35 yards of total offense (-12 rushing and 47 passing) and three first downs.

The Conqs have committed 17 turnovers this season.

“I love to see us build confidence on defense,” said Hutchinson coach Drew Dallas during his radio postgame interview. “We have a lot of new guys with a new (defensive) scheme. I thought on both sides of the ball, we were very clean (few penalties). Our offense did a good job.”

The Blue Dragons got on the scoreboard first on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Samari Collier to wide receiver Tre Brown. Blue Dragons’ kicker Nestus Burger kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

After the Blue Dragons got the football back at the Dodge City 28-yard line, Collier scored on a 1-yard plunge with 8:12 left in the first quarter. Burger’s PAT kick made the score 14-0.

However on their third series, Collier threw a backward pass on a lateral that was recovered by the Conquistadors and returned to the HutchCC 33-yard line. However, the Conqs gained just 2 yards and turned the ball over on downs.

HutchCC’s Waymond Jordan Jr., the three-time KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week, broke loose for a 48-yard run to put the Blue Dragons in scoring position at the DCCC 21-yard line.

Jordan ran a wheel route out of the backfield and caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Collier. The PAT kick from Burger gave HutchCC a 21-0 lead with 2:47 left in the first quarter.

HutchCC backup quarterback Christian Johnson capped a 10-play, 85-yard drove with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Brown with 11:14 lef tin the second quarter. Burger’s fourth PAT kick made the score 28-0.

On Dodge City’s next possession, the Blue Dragons got a strip/sack/fumble to get the ball back. Julius Bolden scored from 2 yards out. Blaise Hoover ran in the 2-point conversion for a 36-0 lead with 9:50 left in the first half.

HutchCC’s LaModrick Spencer forced a fumble in the end zone and recovered it with 6 seconds left in the first half for a 42-0 lead. Because of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, Burger had to kick a 35-yard extra point and missed it.

Hutchinson missed three field goals in the game.

Neither team scored in the second half.

The Hutchinson offense rolled up 399 yards of total offense (229 passing and 170 rushing) and committed two turnovers.

Jordan Jr. rushed for 75 yards on 10 carries. Bolden added 34 yards on 14 carries. Brown caught 6 passes for 114 yards.

HutchCC’s Collier completed 10-of-13 passes for 136 yards. Johnson completed 9-of-15 passes for 93 yards and added 25 yards rushing on 6 carries.

Dodge City’s Derik Shanks Jr. rushed for 39 yards on 15 carries. Akim Lanieux caught 2 passes for 43 yards.

The HutchCC defense was led in tackles by Henson and JaQuel Mack with 5 each. Sam Brooks led the Conqs with 12 tackles and added a fumble recovery.

In addition to beating No. 14 Dodge City,  the Blue Dragons also have wins over preseason No. 1 Iowa Western and No. 12 Iowa Central.
