Hutchinson Community College freshman goalkeeper Marina Lopez was named the KJCCC Division I Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week on Tuesday.
Lopez is the first Blue Dragon goalkeeper and the third overall player to earn Jayhawk Conference weekly honors this season.
Hutchinson Community College sophomore running back Waymond Jordan Jr. touched the ball only nine times Saturday and scored a career-high four touchdowns to lead the No. 1 Blue Dragons to a 99-0 win over Ellsworth on Saturday.
Jordan was named the KJCCC Football Offensive Player of the Week this season on Tuesday.
This is Jordan’s third time earning KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week honors this season, also winning after games against New Mexico Military in Game 1 and Iowa Western in Game 2.
After 40 years of no sub-18 minute times in Hutchinson Community College women’s cross-country history, Blue Dragon freshman Faith Jepchirchir was the first of three to break that barrier on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark.
Jepchirchir broke Hutchinson’s 5,000-meter women’s cross-country record and placed in the Top 25 in a power-packed field at the Arkansas Chili Pepper Festival.
The Blue Dragon freshman from Kenya earned KJCCC Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Hutchinson Salthawk boys soccer team beats Valley Center, Buhler
The Hutchinson High School varsity boys soccer team handed Valley Center its first loss of the season Tuesday night at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.
The Salthawks, who led at halftime 3-1, won the match 3-2.
The Salthawk JV squad tied Valley Center Tuesday 1-1 (also the halftime score).
The Salthawks varsity boys soccer team shut out Buhler 3-0 Monday at Buhler High School. The Salthawks led 2-0 at halftime.
The Hutchinson-Buhler junior varsity boys soccer match ended in a 0-0 tie on Monday.
Cole Bleything, Griffin Galyon and Landon Nasser scored Hutchinson’s goals against Buhler. Alex Mendez and Elias Delacruz got the assists.
“The guys were really geared up for this match against our cross-town rivals, and they delivered a win,” said Hutchinson boys soccer coach Tyler Lawrence. “Both games were a battle and there is always an exciting atmosphere playing Buhler.”
Hutchinson (7-1-1) plays at Arkansas City (5-3) on Thursday.
Buhler (4-5) plays at Rose Hill on Thursday.
Hutch High volleyball 0-2 at Derby Triangular
The Hutchinson High School varsity volleyball team fell to Derby 22-25, 25-13, 25-18 and Valley Center 25-22, 25-18 at the Derby Triangular Tuesday night.
Hutchinson plays at Salina Central Saturday and Maize South next Tuesday.
Buhler varsity, JV volleyball teams combine for 4 wins
The Buhler High School varsity and junior varsity volleyball teams combined to go 4-0 Tuesday night.
The Crusaders’ varsity defeated Mulvane 25-18, 25-15 and Augusta 25-20, 25-15. The JV defeated Mulvane 25-17, 25-17 and Augusta 25-12, 25-14.
Hutch High girls golf team 6th at Newton Invitational
The Hutchinson varsity girls golf team placed sixth at the Newton Invitational Tuesday with a 403 score.
The tournament took place at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course.
Salthawk golfer Ava Burlie tied for eighth in the individual medalist competition with a 92.
Hutchinson’s Bryan Hall placed 19th with a 102 score, Lily Rodriguez tied for 20th at 103 and Lydia Patterson tied for 24th at 106.
Hutchinson JV girls golfers Hannah Marcum and Renna Ehling tied for second place in the Hutchinson JV Scramble Monday at Hutchinson’s Carey Park. Both shot nine-hole scores of 49.
Buhler girls golf team places 2nd at Newton
The Buhler High School varsity girls golf team placed second at the Newton Invitational Tuesday with 369 score, finishing 28 strokes behind first-place Andover.
Buhler’s Anika Paulsrud placed third with a 79. Newton’s Naomi Koontz won top medalist honors with a 69, edging out Andover’s Regan Dusenberry by one stroke.
Buher’s Paityyn Weber and Macy Miller placed 10th and 11th at 94 and 95. Buhler’s Harlie Terrell and Juliette Shanks placed 18th and 20th at 101 and 103. Buhler’s Addison Specht tied for 28 at 109.
The Buhler varsity, featuring JV golfers, placed 5th at the Pretty Prairie Invitational Tuesday.
The Pretty Prairie meet took place at The Links at Pretty Prairie.
Bailey Warkentine tied for ninth at Pretty Prairie with a 52. Niah Dilbeck tied for 11th at 52, followed by Alexis Julian and Eva Goertz, who tied for 27th with 62s. Kylie Gregg placed 32nd at 63 and Aiylnn Ehmke was 36th at 69.
Pretty Prairie’s Jewelynn Reese tied for sixth at 50 and Lyndsey Hoyt tied for 9th at 52. Nickerson’s Jillian Hartman tied for 13th with a 55.
The Buhler JV golfers placed 11th at the Andale Invitational Monday with a 437 score.
The Andale tournament took place at Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney.
Buhler’s top individual golfer at the Andale meet was Ellie Goering, who placed 31st with a 103 score. Kaylee Schroder tied for 45th, 109; Maecy Rosenberg, tied 52nd, 112; Madalyn Bohring, tied 55th, 113; Gracyn Bergmeier, tied 57th, 114; Ashlyn Bounds, 59th, 115.
The top three teams were McPherson 336, Andover 337 and Wellington 340.
Andover’s Regan Dusenberry won the first-place medal with a 70.
McPherson junior Brodie Kuhn, a two-time state tournament placer, recorded a home-in-one on hole No. 7 at Cherry Oaks. She placed second in the tournament with a 75.
Teammates Andi Buschboom placed sixth with an 80, Pera Bauer was ninth with an 84, Addison French 23rd with a 97, Hattie Gibson tied for 34th at 107 and Amelia Moody tied for 45th at 109.
Buhler’s Kamryn Martens fired a 43 and won the first-place medal Monday at the Valley Center JV Invite 9-hole event at Valley Point Golf Course.
Buhler’s Kylie Gregg tied for second with a 44, Edilinyah Sewell tied for seventh with a 45, Ava Schmidt tied for 13th with a 48, Brylee Belt tied for 18th with a 51 and Avery Moore tied for 29th with a 55.
Buhler golfers Eva Goertz, Bailey Warkentin, Alexis Julian, Aivlynn Ehmke, Grace Schmidt and Niah Dilbeck competed at the Hutchinson JV Scramble Monday at Hutchinson’s Carey Park.
Salthawk varsity tennis team 4th at Goddard Eisenhower tournament
The Hutchinson High School varsity girls tennis team placed fourth at the Goddard Eisenhower Invitational.
The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Ayla Booe and Ellie Foos placed first. The No. 2 doubles team of seniors Addie Lewis of Payzlee Regier placed second.
In No. 2 singles, sophomore Maggie Kaplan placed sixth. In No. 1 singles, senior Rylee Miller placed seventh.
Buhler varsity girls tennis team 3rd at Smoky Valley tourney
The Buhler High School varsity girls tennis team placed third at the eight-school Smoky Valley Invitational Tuesday in Lindsborg.
Buhler’s Ashlyn Coker placed third and Cassidy Banning 13th in the open-draw 16-player singles competition.
In the open-draw 16-player doubles competition, the Buhler duo of Addie Caywood and Emily Allen placed third. The team of Katelyn Harding and Kylee Bradshaw placed eighth.
Salthawk JV football team beats Salina South, freshman fall to Wellington
The Hutchinson High School Salthawk junior varsity football team defeated Salina South 22-8. The Salthawks led at halftime 14-8.
The Salthawk freshman football team lost to Wellington 19-14. The Wellington Crusaders led at halftime 13-0.
Halstead volleyball sweeps Smoky Valley, Hoisington
The Halstead High School volleyball team swept Smoky Valley and Hoisington Tuesday night at Hoisington.
The Dragons defeated Smoky Valley 25-16, 15-16 and Hoisington 25-22, 25-20.
The Halstead junior varsity volleyball team went 1-1 Tuesday at Hoisington. The Dragons lost to Hoisington 25-16, 15-25, 15-10 and defeated Smoky Valley 27-25, 25-10.
The Halstead C team posted a 1-1 record Tuesday. The Dragons defeated Hoisington 25-9, 26-24 and lost to Smoky Valley 25-16, 25-27, 17-15.
