Haven football team now 4-0, Buhler improves to 3-1

The Haven High School football team defeated Douglass 37-0 on the road Friday night and Buhler defeated Towanda-Circle 55-14 on homecoming night at Buhler.

The Haven Wildcats are off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1994. Haven has outscored its four opponents 186-37. Buhler, which lost to Great Bend last week, improved to 3-1.

Haven quarterback Nash Wray threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Chandler Ingold and had touchdown runs of 14 and 38 yards. 

Vance Loop got the Wildcats’ first touchdown on a 1-yard run. Cole Brawner scored on a 7-yard run.

Kolton Altvater made 4-of-5 extra point kicks and kicked a 36-yard field goal for Haven’s final points.

Wray completed 12-of-20 passes for 168 yards and ran for 87 yards on 10 carries. Loop rushed for 111 yards on 16 carries. Brawner added 50 yards on 9 carries.

Ingold caught 5 passes for 97 yards including the touchdown and a 52-yard grab. Grant Patry had catches of 19 and 17 yards.

Haven rolled up 426 yards in total offense and held Douglass to 157 total yards.

Jaxson Wilder led the Wildcats’ defense with 11 tackles. Patry had 10 stops, Maddix Finecy 9 and Blake Richey 8.

Haven hosts Garden Plain next Friday. The Owls defeated Belle Plaine 56-0 Friday at home.

Towanda-Circle (1-3) plays at Winfield next Friday.

Winfield lost 29-23 in overtime Friday night at McPherson. The Vikings trailed 23-0 and scored 23 straight points to force overtime. The host Bullpens scored a touchdown in overtime.

Buhler powers past Towanda-Circle

The Buhler Crusaders blasted Towanda-Circle 55-14.

Buhler led 14-0 after one quarter, 42-0 at halftime and 42-6 at the end of the third quarter.

Junior tailback Ben Clouse, who rushed for 210 yards rushing on 17 carries with four touchdowns, scored the Crusaders’ first touchdown on a 10-yard touchdown with 10:25 left in the first quarter.

Junior quarterback Brendan Scripsick connected with Mitchel McDaniel on a 23-yard touchdown pass with 5:57 left in the first quarter.

Clouse scored three touchdowns in the second quarter on runs of 18, 6 and 2 yards.

Nick Gazaway scored on a 15-yard touchdown run. Jared Miller made all six of his first-half extra-point kicks.

Circle Thunderbirds’ quarterback Mason Stobert threw two touchdown passes to cut the Crusaders’ lead to 42-14.

Buhler’s Max Harmony scored on a 12-yard touchdown run and Dylan Scripsick added a 15-yard touchdown run to stretch Buhler’s final cushion to 55-14.

Buhler missed the PAT kick after Harmony’s touchdown and Fletcher Westfall made the PAT kick after Scripsick’s touchdown.

Brendan Scripsick completed 5-of-10 passes for 66 yards and one touchdown and added 3 carries for 20 yards.

Harmony carried the ball 4 times for 82 yards and one touchdown.  Dylan Scripsick carried the ball 14 times for 72 yards and one touchdown. Carter Jones had 8 yards on 3 carries.

McDaniel had 23 yards on 1 catch (for the TD). Gazaway had 1 catch for 18 yards. Harmony had 1 catch for 15 yards. Jacob Miller had 2 catches for 10 yards.

Jeremy Gentry led the Crusader defense with 6 tackles. Four players each made 5 stops.

The Thunderbirds’ Stobart completed 25-of-47 passes for 231 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Christian Andrews had a 50-yard running play. Sawyer caught 5 passes for 81 yards and one touchdown.

Buhler hosts Wamego (3-1) next Friday. Wamego defeated Topeka Hayden 31-28 on Friday.

Hutch High girls tennis team wins Derby Invitational

The Hutchinson High School girls tennis team captured first place at the Derby Invitational Thursday.

The No. 1 doubles team consisting of seniors Ayla Booe and Ellie Foos finished first and the No. 2 doubles team featuring seniors Addie Lewis and Payzlee Regier also placed first.

Sophomore Maggie Kaplan placed third in No. 2 singles. Senior Rylee Miller placed sixth in No. 1 singles.

Hillsboro Trojans down Halstead Dragons

The Hillsboro Trojans defeated the Halstead Dragons 27-0 in a Central Kansas League football game Friday night at Hillsboro.

Halstead improved to 2-2 and Halstead fell to 1-3.

The score was tied 0-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Hillsboro’s Zayne Haslett scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 8:09 left. Lincoln Wichert kicked the extra point.

Haslett scored on an 11-yard touchdown run with 20 seconds left in the third quarter. Wichert’s PAT kick made the score 14-0.

Hillsboro’s Jesiah Gooch scored on a 10-yard touchdown run with 5:50 left in the game. Wichert’s third extra point kick made the score 21-0.

With less than a minute left in the game, Owen Dale scored Hillsboro’s final touchdown on a Pick-6 (interception for touchdown).

Halstead plays at Minneapolis next Friday and Hillsboro travels to Ellsworth.

Hesston Swathers down Nickerson

The Hesston High School football team defeated Nickerson 53-6 Friday night at Hesston.

Hesston led 46-0 at halftime.

Hesstion (4-0) hosts Smoky Valley next Friday and Nickerson (0-4) plays at Andale (4-0).

In other area games Friday night, Hutchinson Central Christian defeated Fairfield 46-6, Reno County Sabres defeated Marmaton Valley 84-78, Inman defeated Whitewater-Remington 30-26, Sterling defeated Ellinwood 41-35 and Pretty Prairie lost to Victoria 56-0.
