The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team lost a four-set match 3 sets to 1 to Dodge City Community College Monday night at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
The Blue Dragons handed the Conquistadors a 25-17 loss in the first set with a hitting percentage of .323 while limiting the Dodge City to -.032.
The Dragons jumped out to leads of 15-7 and 20-12. Precious Johnson had three early kills to set the tone for HutchCC.
The Conquistadors scored the final 2 points of the second set to win 25-22 and tie the match at 1-1. HutchCC trailed 11-9 and 21-18. A service ace by HutchCC’s Ellie Suber cut the Conqs lead to 23-22.
Dodge City won the third set 25-20 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. After HutchCC cut the Dodge lead to 19-18 and 22-20, the Conqs scored the final 3 points.
Dodge City won the final match 25-18 and took the match 3 sets to 1.
The Blue Dragons fell to 11-10 overall and 2-3 in the Jayhawk Community College Conference. Dodge City improved to 13-9 overall and 4-1 in KJCCC play.
HutchCC plays Pratt Community College (3-13) in a KJCCC match at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Beaverdome in Pratt.
The Blue Dragons host No. 5 Barton Community College at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.
Dodge City plays at No. 6 Colby Community College Wednesday and hosts Seward County Community College on Saturday.
HutchCC football team No. 1 for third week
The Hutchinson Community College football team (3-0) stayed at No. 1 in the NJCAA Division I poll for Week 5 (Sept. 23, 2024) despite not playing Saturday because of a bye week.
The No. 1 Blue Dragons host the Ellsworth Community College Panthers (0-4) at noon Saturday at Gowans Stadium.
The Blue Dragons picked up all 12 first-place votes from NJCAA Division football coaches. HutchCC has been ranked No. 1 for three weeks and has been ranked in 38 consecutive polls — tied for the second-longest run in program history in NJCAA Division I polls.
Garden City Community College (3-1 overall, 2-0 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference) is ranked seventh, Butler Community College (2-1 overall, 1-0 KJCCC) is ranked 12th and Highland Community College (2-1 overall, 0-1 KJCCC) is ranked 13th.
Dodge City Community College (2-2 overall, 1-0 KJCCC) received votes.
The Blue Dragons were also ranked in 38 consecutive polls from 2018 to the third week in 2021. Hutchinson was out of six of the next 7seven polls before returning on Nov. 2, 2021, which started the current run in the rankings.
The Blue Dragon record for consecutive weeks ranked in the polls is 45, which was set from 2010 to 2013.
This is the sixth time the Blue Dragons have been ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA polls and it’s the third week in a row Hutchinson is the top team in the rankings.
The Dragons have been ranked No. 1 in 32 of the past 58 polls and have been ranked in the nation’s Top 3 for 33 consecutive polls.

Blue Dragon women’s soccer still ranked 17th
Hutchinson Community College (4-1-3) stayed ranked at No. 17 in the latest NJCAA Division I women’s soccer poll for the second straight week.
Butler CC (7-0-2) is ranked sixth, Kansas City Kansas (6-0-3) is ranked 10th and Cowley County Community College (4-2-1) is ranked 14th.
The Dragons are 3-1-3 in the KJCCC, which is good enough for fourth place in the league standings.
The Blue Dragons were 0-0-1 last week, battling No. 9 Kansas City to a 1-1 draw last Wednesday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
The Blue Dragons have been ranked in 14 consecutive polls going back to the 2023 preseason poll.
That’s the second-longest consecutive streak of weeks being ranked in the national rankings since being ranked in 15 consecutive polls in 2009 and 2010.
For the first time this season, there is a new No. 1 team as Navarro takes over the top spot from defending national champion Iowa Western. Seminole State, Tyler and Arizona Western remain Nos. 3, 4 and 5.
