The Hutchinson High School volleyball team posted a 2-2 record at the Maize Tournament Saturday and placed fifth.
Hutchinson defeated Newton 2 sets to 0 (25-20, 25-22) and Maize 2 sets to 1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-22).
The Salthawks lost to Wichita Northwest 2 sets to 1 (15-14, 23-25, 25-21) and Goddard Eisenhower 2 sets to 0 (25-23, 25-17).
The fifth-place finish and the win over Newton were not posted in Sunday’s Hutchinson Tribune article on the Salthawks.
Hutch High runners compete in Fritz Snodgrass cross country meet in Wichita
Hutchinson High School junior Ethan Holmes placed 50th in the 5,000-meter varsity boys race at the Wichita East High School Fritz Snodgrass Invitational cross country meet Saturday at the Cessna Activity Center in Wichita.
Holmes posted a time of 19 minutes, 0.56 seconds.
Teammates Lalo Rodriguez and Aiden Koontz placed 78th and 99th with times of 19:45.61 and 21:29.75. Rodriguez is a junior and Koontz is a sophomore.
Hutchinson sophomore Avery Tecklenburg placed 58th in the varsity girls 5,000-meter race with a time of 24:03.15.
Salthawk sophomore Damaris Rodriguez placed 40th in the junior varsity girls 5,000-meter race with a time of 26:59.95.
Hutchinson freshman Ryan Rudolph Penka placed 128th in the JV boys 5,000-meter race with a time of 25:07.88. Junior Hunter Kalish placed 142nd with a time of 27:39.18.
Salthawk cross country runners will compete Thursday at the Goddard Invitational Thursday at Lake Afton Park and the University of Kansas meet Saturday at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence. The Kansas Class 6A and 5A State meets take place on Nov. 2 at Rim Rock Farm.
Reno County Sabres defeat Fairfield 64-42
The Reno County Sabres Homeschool football team outslugged Fairfield 64-42 Friday night at the Fairfield High School football field near Langdon.
Reno County led 30-28 at halftime.
Sophomore quarterback Bo Smith completed 12-of-17 passes for 176 yards and three touchdowns and carried the ball 8 times for 81 yards and two more touchdowns.
Senior Brecken Guthrie, rushed 9 times for 94 yards and one touchdown and caught 3 passes for 49 yards. Sophomore Jeff Smith caught 5 passes for 62 yards and 2 touchdowns. Junior Ryan Cass caught 2 passes for 42 yards.
For the season, Bo Smith has completed 42-of-68 passes (62%) for 655 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has carried the ball 43 times for 303 yards and 9 touchdowns.
Jeff Smith has 17 catches for 259 yards and 5 touchdowns. Junior Bruce Kingsley has 8 catches for 160 yards and 43 touchdowns.
Reno County Sabres volleyball teams successful at home tournament
The Reno County Sabres homeschool volleyball teams netted two first-place finishes, two seconds and a fourth at their home invitational tournament Saturday at the Sterling College Gleason Center.
The Sabres varsity A team captured first place and the high school junior varsity No. 1 team finished first.
The junior high school B team defeated the junior high C team in a championship match for the second time this season.
The junior high school A team placed second and the junior varsity No. 2 team placed fourth.
The Sabres play the Smoky Valley Homeschool Educators Tuesday at the Salina Fieldhouse.
Two Buhler JV girls tennis teams compete in Saturday tournaments
Two Buhler High School junior varsity tennis teams competed in tournaments on Saturday.
One Crusader JV team placed third at Maize.

Hutchinson, Great Bend listed as “others” in KSHSAA Covered 5A rankings, Buhler 5th in 4A
The Hutchinson Salthawks (2-1), who have posted two straight shutouts for the first time since 1984, and the Great Bend Panthers (3-0), who defeated Buhler 43-26 Friday night, still are listed among “others” in Class 5A in the Week 3 KSHSAA Covered high school football rankings released on Sunday.
Buhler (2-1) dropped to No. 5 from No. 3 in the Class 4A rankings.
Haven (3-0) is listed among “others” in Class 3A. Hutchinson Central Christian (2-1) is listed among “others” in Eight-Man II.
Little River (3-0) remained at No. 3 in Eight-Man I.
No. 1 teams are Derby (3-0), Class 6A; St. Thomas Aquinas (guided by former Hutchinson coach Randy Dreiling, going for his 10th state championship in 2024 — he won seven with the Salthawks), Class 5A; Andover Central, Class 4A; Topeka Hayden, Class 3A; Norton, Class 2A; Conway Springs, Class 1A; Hoxie, Eight-Man I; Axtell, Eight-Man II; and Cunningham, Six-Man.
