HutchCC volleyball team 2-2 at Blue Dragon Classic

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team hosted the Blue Dragon Classic Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena and posted a 2-2 record.

On Saturday, HutchCC (11-9) lost to MSU-West Plains (12-4) in four sets (25-23, 28-26, 17-25, 25-16 and defeated Labette 25-9, 25-17, 25-10.

In Friday matches, the HutchCC volleyball team defeated McCook Community College 25-10, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20 and lost to Iowa Western 25-19, 21-15, 25-13, 25-22.

On Saturday, McCook CC (13-4) played MSU-West Plains (no score listed) and defeated Butler Community College 3 sets to 0. Butler (9-10) defeated Iowa Western 3 sets to 0. Iowa Western defeated Labette (2-10) 3 sets to 0.

On Friday, McCook defeated Iowa Western 3 sets to 2, Butler Community College lost 3 sets to 0 to Missouri State University-West Plains and 3 sets to 0 to Labette Community College and MSU-West Plains defeated Labette 3 sets to 0.

HutchCC hosts Dodge City at 6 p.m. Monday, plays at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pratt and hosts Barton Community College at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Salthawks football team plays at Salina South Thursday

The Hutchinson High School Salthawks, 21-0 road winners at Maize Friday night, will play a 7 p.m. road game Thursday at Salina South.

The Cougars lost to Class 6A No. 1 Derby 59-7 Friday.

“They (Salina South) have a young energetic staff,” said Hutchinson Salthawks’ head coach Mike Vernon. “They will have a plan for us.”

The Salthawks have outgained opponents in rushing yards 636-238 this season, led by senior fullback Kade Smith who has gained 524 yards with four touchdown runs, including a 58-yard touchdown run against Maize.

Terrell King has 61 yards rushing and one touchdown run.

Senior quarterback Levi Kepler has completed 11-of-26 passes for 140 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

Mitchell Rice has 4 catches for 41 yards. Taishaun Williams has 3 catches for 49 yards and one touchdown.

Cater Morgan and King have one interception each to lead the Salthawks’ defense.

Jackson Anderson leads the Salthawks in tackles with 30, followed by Morgan with 28, Kevin Wilson 26, Brodie McCuan 18, Deon Garrett 15, Skylar Ray 12, Tramel Walker 7, Kaiden May 6, Gavaughn Embers 5, Jake Wolfe 3, Spencer Riggs 2 and Gabe Valadez 2.

Anderson has 7 TFL (tackles for loss), followed by Garrett with 4.5 and Wilson 3. Anderson has Hutchinson’s lone sack through three games but leads the team in quarterback pressures with 4. Morgan, Garrett and Ray each have 3.

Salthawk volleyball team 1-2 at Maize Tournament

The Hutchinson High School volleyball team posted a 1-2 record at the Maize Tournament Saturday.

The Salthawks defeated Maize 2 sets to 1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-22) in its first match Saturday at the Maize Tournament.

The Salthawks lost to Wichita Northwest 2 sets to 1 (15-14, 23-25, 25-21) and Goddard Eisenhower in two sets (25-23, 25-17).

Halstead wins 2nd straight Marion Spikefest Volleyball tourney title

Halstead High School defeated Moundridge in two sets to become the back-to-back Marion Spikefest volleyball tournament champions.

Halstead’s Bailey Bernal, Dalaina Schutte and Katharine Engel were named to the all tournament team.

The Dragons defeated Lyons 25-17, 25-11, Wichita Central Christian Academy 25-14, 25-17 and Marion 25-17, 25-20  in pool play.

The Dragons defeated Berean Academy 25-16, 25-9 in the semifinals.

Haven football team improves to 3-0

The Haven High School football team improved to 3-0 with a 42-16 weather-delayed victory over Smoky Valley Friday night at Haven.

Haven plays at Douglass next Friday.

Haven’s Vance Loop scored three touchdowns on runs of 81, 11 and 45 yards. Quarterback Nash Wray ran 65 yards for one touchdown and threw touchdown passes of 62 yards to Chandler Ingold and 8 yards to Aiden Hoopes.

Kolton Altvater kicked six extra points.

Gavin Stambaugh and Zeke Baker scored touchdowns for Smoky Valley and the Vikings also scored on 2 points on a safety.

Haven led 21-0 at halftime and 28-10 after three quarters.

Wray passed for 212 yards and rushed for 101. Loop ran for 159 yards on 12 carries. Ingold caught 4 passes for 90 yards, Hoopes 6 for 58, Altvater 1 for 32 and Loop 1 for 20.

Grant Patry made 13 tackles for the Haven defense and Blakey Richey made 12 stops.

Stambaugh rushed for 162 yards on 22 carries for the Vikings.

Haven rolled up 479 yards in total offense (212 passing and 267 rushing). The Vikings had 231 yards in total offense (27 passing and 204 rushing).

Halstead shuts out Nickerson 38-0

The Halstead High School football team shut out Nickerson 38-0 Friday night at Nickerson.

The Dragons led 7-0 after one quarter and 28-0 at halftime.

In the first quarter, Braxton Creed scored on an 11-yard touchdown run. Carlos Martinez kicked the extra point.

In the second quarter, Creed hooked up with Edric Zorn on a 40-yard touchdown pass. Again Martinez kicked the PAT.

Joey Millspaugh ran for a 2-yard touchdown and Martinez’ PAT made the score 21-0. Creed scored on a 3-yard run and the PAT made the score 28-0.

Creed connected with Noah Diehl for a 46-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter and Martinez made his fifth PAT kick for a 35-0 lead. Martinez added a field goal to cap scoring at 38-0.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

Area football scores, upcoming schedule

In a Thursday night Six-Man game, No. 1 Cunningham defeated Chetopa 52-6.

In other football games of interest Friday night, Buhler lost to Great Bend 43-26, Hutchinson Trinity Catholic defeated Whitewater-Remington 28-8, Hutchinson Central Christian defeated Stanford 48-0, Sterling defeated Inman 21-20, Halstead defeated Nickerson 38-0, Pretty Prairie lost to Pratt-Skyline 22-12 and Reno County Sabres defeated Fairfield 64-42. 

In football games next Friday, Buhler hosts Circle, Hutchinson Central Christian plays at Fairfield, Hutchinson Trinity plays at South Sumner County, Nickerson hosts Hesston, the Reno County Sabes play at Marmaton Valley, Burrton plays at Chase, Halstead plays at Hillsboro, Inman plays at Remington, Pretty Prairie hosts Victoria and Sterling plays at Medicine Lodge.
