HutchCC volleyball takes 3-of-4 sets from Cloud County, soccer team plays to 1-1 draw

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team finally got to play in front of the home fans on Wednesday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons defeated the Cloud County Thunderbirds in four sets on “Blue-Out Night” at the Sports Arena. It was the latest home opener in the history of the Blue Dragon volleyball program.

The Blue Dragons claimed the first set 25-8 and the second set 25-13. The Cloud County Thunderbirds won the third set 27-25. HutchCC won the fourth set 25-16.

Atlyn Proctor had 17 kills, Tiana Simmons had 14, Viktoria Graf 10 and McKenzie Murphy 9. Elie Suber had 39 set assists and 10 digs. Addison Foster had 14 digs, Simmons 8 and Graf 6. Proctor had 18.5 points, Simmons 16.5, Graf 12.5 and Murphy 12.

The Dragons improved to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in Jayhawk Conference play.

Hutchinson plays host to the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic on Friday and Saturday. Games are scheduled for 3, 5 and 7 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday. 

Hutchinson will play McCook at 3 p.m. and Iowa Western at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Blue Dragons play Missouri State-West Plains at noon and Labette at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Butler is the sixth team to complete the field.

The Blue Dragons play host to Dodge City at 6 p.m. Monday at the Sports Arena.

Blue Dragon women’s soccer team ties KCK

The No. 17-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team tied No. 9 Kansas City Kansas 1-1 in a key Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference matchup Wednesday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex.

KCK took a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes and held it at halftime.

HutchCC tied the score at 1-1 with 40 minutes to go in the second half. Haley Rogers broke loose from a double team, sends a pass to Kaitlyn Edwards, who finds Katharine Marx for the game-tying goal.

The Blue Dragons are 4-1-3 overall and 3-1-3 in the KJCCC. KCK is 6-0-2 overall and 4-0-2 in the KJCCC. The Blue Dragons are 6-1-3 all-time against Kansas City.

Hutchinson has outscored its opponents 20-4 in its four home games.

The Blue Dragons play Cowley College at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Cowley Soccer Complex.
