Hutchinson Community College’s Charlie Box fired a final-round 5-under 67 Tuesday afternoon to win the CSU-Pueblo Samuel Proal Classic at Walking Stick Golf Club in Pueblo, Colo.
Box captured individual medalist honors with a two-day, 54-hole, 13-under-par score of 203. HutchCC’s David Razinkas tied for third place with a -5 score of 211.
Jayden Carruthers tied for ninth with -1 215. Jack Northgraves tied for 14th at +2 218. Tyler Walker tied for 16th at +4 220.
Louis Ross and Cal Schultz tied for 21st at +5 221.
The No. 5 Blue Dragons finished second to CSU-Pueblo (-18 846) by one stroke. HutchCC posted a -7 281 in the final round and finished at -17 847.
Dodge City placed third (+6 870), followed by Garden City (+9 873), Lubbock Christian (+9 873) and Otero Junior College (+32 896).
The Blue Dragon men’s golf team will compete at the Iowa Western Invitational next Monday and Tuesday at Bent Tree Golf Course in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Salthawk boys soccer team ties Newton 1-1 in overtime
The Hutchinson High School boys soccer team tied Newton 1-1 in overtime Tuesday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex in Hutchinson.
The score was tied 1-1 at halftime.
“It was a good battle tonight against a top team in our region,” said Hutchinson High School soccer coach Tyler Lawrence on the Hutch Salthawk Athletics and Salthawk Men’s Soccer social media sites.
“The guys will be back in action Thursday at home against Andover, ready to provide another full dose of entertainment.”
The Newton Railers junior varsity boys soccer team defeated Hutchinson 4-1 Tuesday at the Salthawk Soccer Complex. The Railers led at halftime 2-1.
Hutchinson hosts Andover Thursday and Goddard Eisenhower next Tuesday.
In other area high school soccer matches Tuesday night, Buhler defeated Mulvane 2-1.
KJCCC Football Players of the Week: HutchCC’s Collier, Burger, Garden City’s Lassiter
Hutchinson’s Samari Collier and Nestus Burger, along with Garden City’s Tyler Lassiter, have earned Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Football Player of the Week honors for week three of the 2024 season.
Both Hutchinson and Garden City escaped with overtime victories Saturday.
Collier is the Offensive Player of the Week, Burger is the Special Teams Player of the Week and Lassiter is the Defensive Player of the Week.
Collier, Blue Dragon sophomore quarterback, threw for his first career 300-yard game and led the top-ranked Blue Dragons back from 14 points down in a 33-30 overtime victory over No. 15 Iowa Central (then No. 12).
Collier was 23 of 40 passing for 300 yards and three touchdowns against the Tritons. Collier also added 89 rushing yards on 14 carries while throwing two touchdown passes in the final 4:12 of the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Burger, a sophomore, kicked a walk-off 36-yard field goal in overtime to cap the comeback for Hutchinson against Iowa Central.
Burger was 2-for-2 on field goals and 3-for-3 on extra points in the Blue Dragons’ victory. Burger added three touchbacks on six kickoffs in the game, totaling 352 kickoff yards.
Lassiter helped the Garden City Broncbusters pick up a 29-23 win in overtime at Coffeyville with 10 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 1 sack.
Garden City now leads the KJCCC standings with a 2-0 start in conference play. Both wins for GCCC have come on the road.

Hutchinson Salthawks split matches at Salina South triangular
The Hutchinson High School Salthawk volleyball team lost to Salina South 18-25, 27-25, 25-22 Tuesday night at the Salina South Triangular and defeated Derby 25-18, 25-19.
Salina South (10-6) defeated Derby (5-7) 25-22, 25-19 in the other matchup.
Hutchinson (6-5) is off until Sept. 26 when it plays Goddard and Great Bend.
In other area volleyball matches, the Buhler volleyball team lost to Clearwater 15-10, 25-20 and defeated Wellington 25-20, 25-23 Tuesday. The Crusaders play next Tuesday against Andale and Augusta.
Hutchinson Trinity Catholic High School hosted Sterling Tuesday, but no scores were available. The Celtics host Inman Thursday and play Sedgwick and Classical School of Wichita next Tuesday.
The Halstead High School volleyball team lost to Hesston Tuesday night 25-14, 27-25 in a Central Kansas League triangular at Haven, but bounced back with a 25-20, 20-15 win over Haven.
Hesston defeated Haven 25-19, 25-21 in the other varsity match.
The Halstead JV lost to Hesston 25-12, 23-15, 15-12 and defeated Haven 25-19, 25-15.
The Dragons’ C team lost to Hesston 25-15, 25-11 and defeated Haven 25-15, 25-19.
The Haven JV lost to Hesston 25-15, 25-20 and the Wildcats’ C team lost to Hesston 25-14, 25-5.
Salthawk girls tennis team posts two seconds, one third at Campus Invitational
Hutchinson High School girls tennis players captured two second-place finishes at the Haysville-Campus Invitational Monday.
The No. 1 doubles team of Ayla Bode and Ellie Foos placed second, the No. 2 doubles team of Addison Lewis and Payzlee Regier placed second and Maggie Kaplan placed third in No. 2 singles.
Buhler Black JV team 1st, Maroon team 6th at JV meet
The Buhler junior varsity Black team won the Buhler JV Tournament and the Crusader Maroon team placed sixth.
