Inman runners compete at Hesston Swather Special
Inman High School’s Tyler Martisko and Riley Roots earned a medal in their grade levels placing fourth and fifth in the junior boys race at the Hesston Swather Special cross country meet Thursday.
Hesston cross country coach Jay Parsons said the course has the reputation of being fast but not for all the runners on Thursday.
“The weather was just as warm as last week, but I have concluded that when it comes to the first race adrenaline is what most runners are running on,” Parsons said. “They looked forward to the first race because they are wanting more than to practice. So, they get ‘pumped up’ for it and adrenaline takes over.
“When it comes to the second meet, their adrenaline isn’t as present so now it is more just trying to run as well as the previous meet. But that doesn’t always happen and today was one of those days. However, that’s okay. Each one competed the best they could and finished the race, which is always the goal. The times will come.”
In the junior girls’ race, Abigail Siemens earned a medal, finishing 19th. Addison Wedel finished outside of the medals, placing 22nd.
“Abigail improved her time from the previous week by almost a minute,” Parsons said. “Addison dropped almost three minutes off her previous week’s time.”
In the freshman boys race, Inman’s Hunter Schrader finished in 37th place and dropped more than a minute and a half off his previous week’s time.
The Inman varsity travels to Bennington next Thursday.
“They will have an opportunity to run a different kind of course, which will be hilly since it will be held at Rock City Park,” Parsons said. “Hopefully each runner can recover from a tough race this week and return to what they are capable of doing.”
