The Hutchinson Community women’s soccer team, ranked 18th in the latest NJCAA Division I poll, and the Blue Dragons volleyball team both were victorious on Wednesday.
The HutchCC girls soccer team defeated Dodge City 3-0 in a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference matchup Wednesday night at the Salthawk Athletic Field.
The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team swept three sets from the Seward County Saints in a KJCCC road matchup Wednesday night at the Greenhouse in Liberal.
In the soccer match, HutchCC’s Kaylee Monk scored the Blue Dragons’ first goal from 20 yards out.
Kaitlyn Edwards hammered in a rebound off an Ana Pokrandt free kick for a 2-0 Hutch CC lead. Edwards scored her fifth goal of the season.
Gabby Carvalho scored the Blue Dragons’ third goal off a sliding assist by Katharina Marx to make the score 3-0. HutchCC led by that score at halftime. It was Carvahlo’s first goal of the season.
The Blue Dragons have outscored their opponents 18-5 this season.
Hutchinson (3-0-1, 2-0-1 KJCCC) plays No. 10 Butler Community College in a KJCCC match at El Dorado Saturday. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Blue Dragons host Coffeyville at 6 p.m. next Wednesday and play at Barton Community College at 1 p.m. Sept. 14 at Cougar Field in Great Bend.
HutchCC volleyball team sweeps Seward County on the road
The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team swept the Seward County Saints 25-21, 25-18, 25-18 in a KJCCC road matchup Wednesday night at the Greenhouse in Liberal.
The HutchCC volleyball team (6-4) will compete at the Odessa College OC Invitational Thursday through Saturday in Odessa, Texas.
The Blue Dragons play Odessa College at 6 p.m. on Thursday, New Mexico Junior College at noon and Vernon College 5 p.m. on Friday and Panola College at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
Salthawk boys soccer team falls to Dodge City at Titan Classic
The Hutchinson High School boys soccer team lost an 8-0 decision against Dodge City Wednesday afternoon at the Wichita South Titan Classic.
The Salthawks (1-1) trailed at halftime 6-0.
The Salthawks wrap-up tournament play against Wichita West at 1 p.m. Saturday.
HutchCC’s Waymond Jordan Jr. named KJCCC Offensive Player of the Week
Hutchinson Community College sophomore running back Waymond Jordan Jr. was named the Offensive Player of the Week, the KJCCC announced on Tuesday.
The Pensacola, Fla., native rushed for a career-high 179 yards and two touchdowns in the Blue Dragons’ 42-10 win over New Mexico Military Institute on Thursday at Gowans Stadium.
Jordan Jr. has rushing scores of 26 and 54 yards. The 54-yard run early in the second half was the longest career rushing attempt. He averaged just under 13 yards per carry in the 42-10 victory.
Jordan Jr. and the HutchCC Blue Dragons take on Iowa Western Community College at 1 p.m. Saturday at Titan Stadium in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Dodge City’s Sam Brooks was named Defensive Player of the Week and teammate Emanuel Aguilar was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
HutchCC football team moves up to No. 2 in NJCAA poll
The Hutchinson Community College football team, 42-10 winners over New Mexico Military Institute in Week 1 of the season, has moved o to No. 2 in the NJCAA Division I poll for Week 2.
The Blue Dragons were ranked No. 3 in Week 1. The Week 2 rankings came out on Tuesday.
The Highland Community College Scotties are ranked No. 13. The Dodge City Conquistadors are ranked No. 15 with a 10-0 record.
Iowa Western still is No. 1 with a 1-0 record and still garnered all 12 first-place votes.
Nos. 3-12 are Kilgore College, Trinity Valley, Mississippi Gulf Coast, Navarro College, Iowa Central, Copiah-Lincoln, East Mississippi (0-1, the defending national champions), Jones College and Georgia Military College. Lackawanna (Pa.) College is ranked 14th.
Northwest Mississippi, Garden City, Pearl River and Butler CC received votes.
HutchCC’s Haley Rogers named KJCCC women’s soccer Player of the Week
Hutchinson Community College sophomore forward Haley Rogers posted her first career hat trick and had nine points in two matches this past week for the No. 20-ranked Blue Dragons.
On Tuesday, the sophomore from Maize was named the KJCCC Division I Women’s Soccer Player of the Week.
In Hutchinson’s 7-2 victory over Garden City, Rogers had a career-high seven points with three goals and an assist to pace the Dragons. Her first career hat trick was the 99th all-time hat trick in Blue Dragon women’s soccer history.
Rogers tallied a pair of impressive assists in the Dragons’ 2-2 tie at Seward County.
First, Rogers delivered a perfect cross for teammate Kaitlyn Edwards to head in. Later in the first half, Rogers’ corner kick was headed in by Ana Pokrandt for a 2-0 lead.
That’s the third time already this season that Rogers has had a direct assist or scored directly from a corner kick.
Rogers is tied for second in the KJCCC in goals scored through two weeks with four goals, four assists and 12 points.
Blue Dragon women’s soccer team stays at 18th in latest NJCAA Division I poll
The Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer team stayed at No. 1 in the latest NJCAA Division I poll released on Tuesday.
The Blue Dragons have a 2-0-1 record.
Other Kansas teams ranked in the poll are Cowley County, ninth; Butler Community College, 10th; and Kansas City Kansas, 12th.
Nos. 1-9 are Iowa Western, Eastern Florida, Tyler Junior College, Navarro College, Seminole State College, Salt Lake Community College, Arizona Western College and Daytona State College.
Hill College is No. 11. Nos. 13-20 are Eastern Arizona College, Monroe Community College, Snow College, Motlow State Community, Laramie County Community College and Casper College.
Others receiving votes are Utah State Eastern, Cochise, LSU-Eunice and Barton Community College.
Faith Jepchirchir earns KJCCC women’s cross country honor
Hutchinson Community College women’s cross country’s Faith Jepchirchir’s victory in her collegiate debut earned her KJCCC Women’s Runner of the Week honors for Week 1.
Jepchirchir made Hutchinson history by becoming the first Blue Dragon runner to win the Terry Masterson Twilight Classic on Friday at Fun Valley Sports Complex.
Jepchirchir posted the top Blue Dragon time in event history of 18 minutes, :17 seconds, the ninth-fastest time overall in Masterson history. She won the race by 16.5 seconds over second-place runner Elizabeth Hernandez of Butler.
Jepchirchir dominated the final mile of the three-mile race. She helped the Blue Dragons to a second-place team finish only behind NCAA Division I Wichita State.
The Blue Dragons are next scheduled to compete at the Chili Pepper Festival on Sept. 28 in Fayetteville, Ark.
HutchCC’s Viktoria Graff named KJCCC DI Volleyball Player of the Week
Hutchinson Community College freshman outside hitter Viktoria Graff averaged a league-best 3.67 kills per set in five matches last week. She was named the KJCCC Division I Volleyball Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Graf, a 6-foot-2 freshman outside from Zwetti, Austria, led the Blue Dragons to a 3-2 week, including a 3-1 mark in the McCook Invitational.
Graf had a huge week for Hutchinson, averaging a .249 attack percentage on 77 total kills. Graf had a career-high 27 kills while hitting .396 in Hutchinson’s five-set victory over Lamar.
She posted her first career double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs in a five-set victory over No. 9 Indian Hills.
Graf had three double-doubles in five matches last week against Indian Hills, Western Nebraska (18 kills, 14 digs), and North Platte (12 kills, a career-high 18 digs).
