Salthawk boys soccer team opens Titan Classic with win over Garden City

By John Mesh

The Hutchinson High School boys soccer team opened the season with a 2-1 victory over Garden City 2-1 Monday afternoon in the first round of the 43rd annual Wichita South Titan Classic.

The Salthawks led 2-0 at halftime.

Hutchinson senior Landon Nusser scored first for the Salthawks, assisted by Griffin Galyon.

Minutes later senior Cole Bleything led Galyon into space (with a pass) and Galyon was taken down in the box. Nusser converted the penalty kick for his second goal of the game.

“Today’s game was a real challenge and we knew that going in,” said Hutchinson coach Tyler Lawrence. “Our senior class led the team on the offensive and defensive end of the field.

“In the second half we had to adjust our shape and take a lot pressure.  Garden scored one late, but we held on. It was a great team victory and sets a good tone for the season.”

Hutchinson’s tournament schedule continues with a match against Dodge City at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The Salthawks wrap-up tournament play against Wichita West at 1 p.m. Saturday.
