HutchCC volleyball team split matches at Reiver Classic Saturday

The Hutchinson Community College volleyball team split its matches at the Iowa Western Reiver Classic Saturday morning at Reiver Arena in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

The Blue Dragons lost their first match 3 sets to 0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-16) to No. 3-ranked Northeastern Junior College, Sterling, Colo.

Hutchinson defeated Western Nebraska Community College, Scottsbluff, Neb., 3 sets to 0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-16).

HutchCC (2-2) will play Butler Community College at 6 p.m Wednesday at the Power Plant in El Dorado in the first Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference match of the season for the Blue Dragons.

Former Blue Dragon Malik Benson catches 4 passes for Florida State in loss to Georgia Tech in Dublin, Ireland

Former Hutchinson Blue Dragon and NJCAA All-American Malik Benson caught 4 passes for 39 yards for No. 10-ranked Florida State in the first college football game of the 2024 season Saturday against Georgia Tech.

The Aer Lingus College Football Classic was played in Dublin, Ireland, and televised by ESPN.

Georgia Tech upset Florida State 24-21 on a last-second 44-yard field goal by Aidan Birr.

The score was tied 14-14 at halftime. Florida State kicker Ryan Fitzgerald, who kicked a 52-yard field with 11:06 left in the second quarter, kicked a 59-yarder as time expired in the first half.

Benson, who transferred to FSU from Alabama this offseason, caught his passes from Seminoles’ quarterback DJ Uiagalelei. He also returned a punt for 3 yards.

Benson caught two key first-down passes on a 15-play touchdown drive that tied the score at 21-21 with 6:33 left in the game

Benson, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior from Lansing (Kan.) High School, attended HutchCC for two years.

As a freshman at HutchCC, Benson had 43 receptions for 1,229 yards and 11 touchdowns.

As a sophomore, he had 54 receptions for 923 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. The 2,152 receiving yards is a school record.
