It was a two-day showdown at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson’s Carey Park.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the Hutchinson Monarchs, the defending National Baseball Congress champions, took on the Haysville Aviators, the Jayhawk Collegiate League first-half-of-the-season champions.
Hutchinson (12-5 Jayhawk Collegiate League play and 13-5 overall) won Wednesday’s game 6-4 and came from behind to defeat the Aviators 13-8 Tuesday night.
The Aviators (13-5 in league play and 14-6 overall) defeated Hutchinson 4-2 on June 1 and 7-6 on June 2 at Plagens-Carpenter Park in Haysville.
Hutchinson Monarchs 6, Haysville Aviators 4
In Wednesday night’s game at Hobart-Detter Field, Hutchinson took a 1-0 lad in the bottom of the first inning.
The Monarchs scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
Austin Coyle walked to lead off the fourth and stole second base. After one out, Drew Bugner singled and Coyle scored when the right fielder made an error. Bugner stole second and scored on Brett Smajstria’s single.
The Aviators scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead.
Hutchinson’s Jarrett Flaggert tied the game at 4-4 with a long home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Monarchs left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning without scoring.
Hutchinson scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead.
Monarchs’ pitcher Carson Cornelius, who pitched in relief of Monarchs’ starting pitcher Ian Regal, set the Aviators down in order in the top of the eighth inning. The Monarchs stranded a baserunner in the bottom of the frame without scoring.
Cornelius set down the Aviators in the top of the ninth inning for the 6-4 victory. He recorded eight strikeouts for the victory.
Hutchinson Monarchs 13, Haysville Aviators 8
Tuesday night, the Monarchs scored 11 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Aviators 13-8. Hutchinson sent 15 hitters to the plate.
Hutchinson’s Blake Bradford belted a solo homer in the bottom of the second inning to give Hutchinson a 2-1 lead. The Aviators scored seven straight runs to take an 8-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eight inning, the Monarchs’ Cooper Wesslund had an RBI single and a two-run single, Blake Brown had a two-run single, Brett Smajstria singled in a run and DJ Merriweather added a two-run single.
In the top of the ninth inning, the first two Haysville batters reached base. Hutchinson’s Reed Scott came out of the bullpen and induced a pop-up and a double play to end the game.
The Hutchinson Base Ball Club played a short exhibition game at Hobart Detter Field before the start of Tuesday’s Hutchinson Monarchs-Haysville Aviators game.
“(Hutchinson Monarchs) fans got see what baseball was like in the 1860s and later in 2024,” said Monarchs’ owner/general manager Marc Blackim.
Hutchinson to play Dirtbag Baseball Club twice
Hutchinson plays against the Dirtbag Baseball Club at 7 p.m. Friday at the Westside Athletic Field in Wichita.
Dirtbag Baseball plays the Monarchs at 7 p.m. Saturday at Hobart-Detter Field.
The Monarchs rescheduled Cancer Awareness Night for Saturday night. A ceremony and honorary first pitches are set for 6:30 p.m.
Among the items available for a silent auction are limited edition jerseys, a one-of-a-kind rocker made from baseball bats, a quilt and a Kendra Scott baseball necklace.
